Gigaset GS160
Recently, the German-based manufacturer Gigaset has announced a new entry-level mobile phone – the GS160. Its chassis is made of light but durable plastic, with a metal frame surrounding the edges. The texture of the body feels good to the touch, and its curved back allows the device to nest firmly in the palms making it perfect for one-handed use. The GS160 is a compact phone, measuring 9.5 x 144 x 72.3 mm. Not many phones are as light as the GS160, it weighs a little over 136 g. The back cover of the phone can be detached to reveal a removable 2500 mAh lithium-ion battery, which delivers a runtime of 440 hours.
The GS160 features a 5-inch 5-point capacitive touchscreen with an aspect ratio of 16:9. The display features a pixel resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a pixel density of 294 PPI. While the GS160 has a maximum brightness rating of 400 nits, the screen is not optimized for wide angle viewing. Other than supporting a 3.5 mm headset jack and dual SIM functions, Gigaset has surprisingly bestowed the GS160 a fingerprint scanner at the back of the device. The fingerprint scanner is not commonly found in devices within the GS160’s price range, yet it does the job well and the phone is unlocked deftly with a touch.
Resting above the fingerprint scanner is the phone’s 13MP primary camera and it is outfitted with a LED flash light, auto focus capabilities and an aperture of f/2.2, allowing the GS160 to snap great shots even in low light conditions. In addition, the GS160 comes with a 5 MP secondary front camera for selfies and video calls. The GS160 runs on Android’s latest v.6 Marshmallow operating system and uses Mediatek MT6737 quad core processor clocked at 1.25 GHz. The phone’s graphics adapter is an ARM Mali-T720 MP2, which can handle casual games at low to medium settings. However, the GS160 comes only with 1 GB of RAM, less than half of the memory compared to other competitors in the same price range. While the phone is not meant to tackle graphics-heavy games or media content, office work and light internet surfing should not be an issue. The GS160 also comes with an 16 GB of internal storage. If this is insufficient, the capacity can be expanded up to 128GB via its card slot. Considering its specs, the Gigaset GS160 will only be practical for people with very basic requirements from a smartphone.

Gigaffordable. The GS160 is Gigaset’s cheapest smartphone so far. The manufacturer has even installed a fingerprint scanner for under 150 Euros (~$160). But is the device anything special or just another low-cost smartphone? Find out in the test report.

Affordable long distance runner. For a price of 200 Euros ($234), Gigaset is offering an entry level smartphone which is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery. It should not come as a surprise that the GS270 achieves a long battery life with that. We evaluate in our test what the interested buyer can expect beyond this.

Gigaset GS370 Plus
With its 151 × 72 × 8.2 mm aluminum housing, the smartphone makes a haptic and visual sense of something. This fits the relatively high weight of 145 grams. Above the screen, the front camera and a notification LED are housed. The speaker sits at the bottom on the right side, the microphone on the left. In the middle there is a microUSB input that supports USB-on-the-go (OTG): With the right cable, it supplies connected devices with power. So, the GS370 serves as a power bank. One card slot for two SIM cards and one microSDXC card is located on the left side of the GS370 plus, on the right there are volume rocker and power button. The dual camera has its place on the back in the upper left corner, the fingerprint sensor is placed well in the middle of the top. The aluminum case was unfortunately prone to fingerprints in the test, but in practice it bothers more that it is a bit slippery. With its Soc MediaTek MT6750 and 4 GB of RAM, the Gigaset has enough to ensure a smooth and efficient experience in most situations. Fortunately, the mobile only heats very little, either after prolonged solicitations CPU + GPU couple or after 10 minutes of photo and video capture. The temperature never exceeds 36 C, which will not interfere with the use. The main camera is a combination of 13 megapixel phase-contrast autofocus sensor, f/2.0 aperture and LED flash, and 8-megapixel sensor with 120-degree wide-angle lens. If necessary, the user can switch between the two lenses within the camera app; there are two zoom levels, so to speak. In addition, there is a blur effect realized with the dual camera: Here you can specify which area should be sharply displayed. The dual camera proved to be mixed in quality. In very good light, the image quality is great. When the light is not quite as optimal, shots quickly become fuzzy and washed out. It is now a habit for Gigaset: the company has delivered a near-stock version of Android on its mobile. App drawer, virtual desktops, shortcuts / notifications panel, everything is there; regulars and neophytes should find their way quickly. The manufacturer has still added a few small home features, including the ability to perform certain actions with gestures on the fingerprint sensor or limit the resources used by the applications in the background. Unfortunately, autonomy is not really the strong point of this Gigaset. Unlike the GS270+ which shipped a massive battery, the GS370 Plus opts for a slightly smaller capacity (3000 mAh) and suffers a little. It will handle a real autonomy of about a day in moderate use. It takes about 2 full hours to recharge the beast with the block provided in the box. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

Wasted potential. With the GS370 Plus, the German communications company Gigaset offers an attractively priced mid-range smartphone with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Weaknesses with the screen, among other things, damage our overall impression of the 5.7-inch device though.

Made in Germany. With the GS185, Gigaset launches the first smartphone designed and assembled in Germany. Considering the price is significantly below 200 Euros (~$233), expectations should not be pitched too high. However, the GS185 offers a trendy 2:1 display and a strong 4000 mAh battery. Find out where it is lacking in this review.

Gigaset GS100
Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam
The Gigaset GS100 is a new entry-level smartphone, which still offers a rich set of features and a panorama display. It has a simple plastic case. There are advantages and disadvantages to this cheap construction though. The plastic case can look cheap compared to a glass panel or metal construction but it is somewhat more resistant to cracks, breaking, scratches and fingerprint smudges. Also, a user can take the back off, which reveals a removable battery. The GS100 weighs 174 g despite its mainly plastic construction, making it heavier than many similar devices. With its MTK 6739 quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and Android 8.1 Oreo in the Go Edition, the GS100 delivers enough performance for almost any application from Instagram to WhatsApp. The GS100 runs on Android Go, which is great for entry-level smartphones. The Go edition requires less processing power and makes do with the built-in RAM, yet still delivers a smooth user experience. For games, the GS100 is powerful enough to handle light gaming, but users will need a faster smartphone if they want to play more demanding games. Plenty of memory and unlimited connectivity are ensured by a dual SIM and a separate MicroSD slot, which can expand the 8 GB of internal memory by up to 128 GB. Snapshots and selfies are captured with 8 and 5 megapixels, respectively, and can then be viewed on the 5.5-inch 18:9 HD+ IPS display at a resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels, which is excellent in this class. The dirt-repellent and scratch-proof 2.5D glass ensures a clear view, and with its slightly rounded corners, it transitions smoothly into the phone's body in Lemon Green, Cobalt Blue or Graphite Grey. The GS100 goes a step further in terms of features and technology. With its NSP audio processor, it targets users who place great value on an especially well-controlled sound with lots of volumes and a wider frequency range. The HD Voice feature suppresses background noise and interference during phone calls. The 3,000 mAh lithium polymer battery offers a decent performance with 550 hours of standby time or 80 hours of music listening (screen off). Thanks to the rapid charging function, with 1.5 A instead of 1 A, the GS180 is recharged 50 percent faster than standard phones. Being replaceable, the battery offers flexibility and extended durability. With the USB-on-the-Go (OTG) function, the user can connect all kinds of USB devices to the phone such as USB mice or keyboards. It also works the other way around and the phone can be used as a power bank. As a conclusion, the Gigaset GS100 is aimed specifically at price-sensitive customers who nevertheless still want a full-featured smartphone; whether used as a kid's first smartphone, the second phone on vacation, or as a device for everyday use.Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam
The Toshiba Satellite Pro R50-C-1E8 is a quiet 15.6-inch office notebook that barely heats up. It features a Core i3 processor from the Skylake generation, which provides the right computing power. Toshiba delivered a basic, 15.6-inch office laptop that is aimed primarily at professional users with its Satellite Pro R50-C. Toshiba uses black plastic exclusively for the casing of its Satellite Pro. The base unit's upper side and lid's back are textured to imitate brushed aluminium. The black plastic is barely decorated with subtle straight lines, the keyboard and trackpad are both black, and only the lid’s Toshiba logo is decorated in metallic, shining plastic. At 2.3 kg, the R50 isn't the lightest laptop around but it's portable. The 6th generation Intel Celeron 3855U processor and the 4 GB of RAM installed has the computing power necessary to run a smooth office or Internet applications. The laptop barely heats up and always works quietly. Besides that, the 128 GB SSD would let the system respond faster and booting times would be shorter. Intel's HD Graphics 510 graphics unit takes care of video output. This laptop can render a few games smoothly. This applies to games that do not have high hardware requirements. Thus, the user will have to be satisfied with low resolutions and low-quality settings even in these games. The matte 15.6-inch screen in Toshiba's laptop has a native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels. Both brightness (216.7 cd/m²) and contrast (390:1) are average. Toshiba installs a viewing angle dependent TN panel into its Satellite. Thus, the screen is not legible from every position. However, it has a matte finish to take the edge of brightly lit office environments. The R50’s keyboard has a sensible layout, with large keys and a number pad, and the Scrabble-tile typing surface proved pleasing to use. The keys were consistent, with a light, rapid action aided by the solid base. The trackpad was fine with Toshiba steering clear of any gimmicks. The smooth surface turns out to be accurate. Toshiba is quite generous with USB ports. The laptop offers four Type-A ports (2x USB 2.0, 2x USB 3.0 Gen.1). Furthermore, two video-outs are installed. The interface positioning could be improved. The left-sided USB port is on the same level as the wrist rest. The stereo speakers are situated above the keyboard behind a perforated cover. They produce a thin, mostly bass-free sound. Using headphones or external speakers is recommended for a better sound experience. As a conclusion, designed with both casual and professional users in mind, the Satellite Pro R50-C allows for quiet work. A high-definition display and a full-size keyboard improve performance. Thanks to its combination of performance and reliability, the Satellite Pro R50-C is the ideal notebook for the basic office environment.Specifications

The Gigaset GS195 comes from German production and in a particularly ecological packaging to the buyer. For less than 200 Euros, it should not only impress with a stylish glass design, but also with a large rechargeable battery. In the test we look at whether this is successful.

Compared to its predecessor, the Gigaset GS190 offers a much more modern design. However, the manufacturer has also tightened the price screw - can this still justify the level of equipment?

Gigaset's GS4 is another smartphone manufactured in Germany that is positioned in the mid-range but still features wireless charging. The strong battery should enable long runtimes and a triple camera is also offered. The GS4 does many things right, but it also reveals shortcomings in the test.

Similar to its big sister, the Gigaset GS3 revives old virtues and has cameras that are flush with the casing and both the back cover and the battery are replaceable. Modern features like wireless charging are also on board. The company from Bocholt offers all this for a low price.

The Gigaset GS5 retains an old virtue this year — the removable battery — but adds a newer SoC, more memory, and a more promising camera setup. In return, it is more expensive and the power adapter is removed from the package.

It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.

72.98%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
