Gigabyte has announced the U4 ultrabook featuring the latest Core i7-1195G7 processor. The Gigabyte U4 weighs just 990 g and is only 16.4 mm thick. Gigabyte offers decent upgradability options including two M.2 NVMe slots along with a good port selection, but the battery capacity seems to have suffered a compromise.

After having had the Aero, Aorus, and Gaming series laptops, Gigabyte is now venturing into ultrabook territory with the new U4. The Gigabyte U4 is only the second major laptop launch to be powered by the Intel Tiger Lake Core i7-1195G7, the other being the MSI Prestige 14 EVO.

Weighing at just 990 g, the Gigabyte U4 is just 16.5 mm thick. The U4 sports a 14-inch FHD display with an 83% screen-to-body ratio and a 100% sRGB color gamut coverage. Gigabyte says that the hinge can be rotated fully flat up to 180°. The company also claims that the U4 is compliant with MIL-STD 810G standards for durability in a variety of environmental conditions.

The Core i7-1195G7 can turbo boost up to 5 GHz on a single core. It remains to be seen how well can the Gigabyte U4 sustain this performance once we get our hands on the device. Complementing the Core i7-1195G7 is DDR4-3200 RAM — 8 GB comes as standard with options to accommodate up to 64 GB. There are two M.2 PCIe NVMe slots on offer, one of which supports Gen4 speeds.

Gigabyte has endowed the U4 with a good port selection that includes 1x USB 3.2 Gen1 (Type-A), 1x USB 3.2 Gen2 (Type-A), 1x Thunderbolt 4, 1x HDMI 2.0 (with HDCP), a combo audio jack, and a microSD card reader. Networking needs are taken care of by the Intel AX201 WLAN card with Bluetooth 5.2. There's also a dual-array microphone and two 1.5 W speakers that are enhanced by DTS:X Ultra audio processing.

While the specifications seem good, the battery could turn out to be a major con for the device. At just 36 Wh and rated for about eight hours (real-world runtimes are usually lower), the battery capacity definitely looks to be on the lower side. Nevertheless, we will reserve our judgement till final testing.

Details about pricing and availability are yet to be known.
