Gateway's NV5807u has an attractive display, above-average speakers, and enough power under the hood to serve as a general-use PC for quite some time. The trade-off you make is in portability: 5.8 pounds of computer is an awful lot to be carting around between classes or around the city, and a 15.6-inch display looks great on a desk but eats up most of an airplane tray table (not to mention your battery life). If you're a student who would rather use a computer to watch movies in your dorm than take notes in class, or if you're a professional who needs the screen space and doesn't mind the weight, then the NV5807u is a solid buy for $599 compared with similarly priced models from other manufacturers, such as the Acer Aspire Timeline, the Lenovo Ideapad Y450, or even Lenovo's business-centric G530, which sells for even less ($499).

These days, perfectly usable laptops can be had for a song, particularly if the laptop being shopped for is a modest midrange model. In what's becoming a trend, Gateway's NV5897u debuts as yet another midsize, decently spec'd Core 2 Duo laptop in a frame that's not too bulky, but certainly won't be confused for a Netbook anytime soon. It may not inspire, but for less than $600, the Gateway NV5807u is a great value as an all-around 15-inch laptop.

Since being acquired by Acer, Gateway's main objective has been to undersell every other big name that distributes cheap laptops. And to its credit, the company has succeeded in putting out some of the most affordable laptops, even if most of the designs look eerily similar. The Gateway NV5807u ($600 street) is cheaper than comparable offerings from Dell, HP, and Toshiba. Unlike its competitors, though, there is no room for customization: The 15.6-inch widescreen, Intel processor, and 4GB of memory (among other common parts in budget laptops) are set in stone for this model. The Gateway NV5807u is the cheapest and fastest among its 15-inch competitors.

This budget 15.6-inch notebook looks great, performs well, and comes with convenient backup software. Gateway’s $599 NV5807u is the best budget mainstream notebook money can buy, thanks to its strong performance, slick design, bright display, and built-in backup software. The NV’s single, stiff touch button might be a turnoff for some people, and there are cheaper 15.6-inch notebooks, such as the $499 Dell Inspiron 15. But overall, the NV presents the fewest compromises in a system this inexpensive.

The Gateway NV5214u is a budget all-purpose laptop, and proud of it. For the sticker price of $529, it offers the standard drill: lackluster speakers, little in the way of bundled software, and a rather hefty footprint. But it's quite a capable machine, providing a respectable bang-to-buck ratio and looking pretty good in the process. What the NV5214u might lack in features, it makes up for in price. And it's easy on the eyes, too.

In the end, then, it comes down to portability versus performance. If you’re planning to carry around your notebook between classes (or indeed regularly between rooms at home) then you may want to look at a lighter, more power-independent model than the Gateway. If, though, you’re content with just occasional lifting then the greater performance of the NV5214u’s grown-up components easily oust the netbook competition. The design is fair and construction reasonable, but it’s the budget price that really tips the scales in the Gateway NV5214u’s favor.

Tired of paying for features you don’t need? Gateway has a notebook for you. At $499, the 6.8-pound NV5214u is priced like a netbook but functions like a mainstream laptop. Its sleek design, 15.6-inch wide-screen LCD, and 1,366x768 native resolution give the impression of a high-end notebook. But when you’re paying half the price of the average mainstream laptop, you should expect to sacrifice some on performance, and this model does demand this. Looking at first glance nothing like a $499 laptop, the AMD-based NV5214u is a steal, though its performance is more telling.

The Gateway NV spits in the face of the $600 to $800 thin and light ULV laptops when it comes to power and HD prowess, though it does sacrifice battery life and thinness for that muscle. While other comparably priced 15.6-inch Core i3 laptops -- like the $650 Sony VAIO VPCEB11FM and $700 HP Pavilion dv6 -- may have more comfortable mouse buttons and keyboards, they don't include Blu-ray drives. With an MRSP of $799.99 (NV59C09u), including a two-year warranty rather than the usual one-year, the Gateway NV59C09u is a solid if uninspiring choice. We'd like to see a higher resolution display to match the Blu-ray drive, and for a multimedia notebook the 320GB hard-drive is miserly and, at 5,400rpm, slow. Performance, meanwhile, is sufficient for everyday tasks but gamers should look elsewhere. The HD-capable optical drive is the NV59C09u's biggest draw, though we'd suggest shopping around since mainstream notebooks often see significant discounts and could well offer better storage than the Gateway manages. The Gateway NV77H05u is a solid performer when it comes to day-to-day tasks, but outside of that there's not much else this budget laptop offers. If you're willing to part with $20 more, then the Editors' Choice Asus U56E-BBL5 will provide more wireless features (WiDi 2.0 and WiMAX) as well as a better processor.

Gateway;s NV77H05u will appeal greatly to a very specific segment of buyers. That would be those looking to get a low cost laptop that features a larger screen with a higher resolution. At $600, it is very affordable and offers some surprising features including 6GB of memory and a USB 3.0 port. This is great for those that don't need high performance or 3D graphics.

A laptop with a quad-core processor for how much? That’s the first question we asked when we set eyes on the compelling-looking Gateway NV55S05u. This AMD-based 15.6-inch laptop is a passable budget option for games and playing media, but it's less able as a workhorse productivity machine.

The Gateway NV5505Su is the type of desktop replacement that'll make you pause and wonder about the shortcomings that come with a low price and unfamiliar AMD parts. Well, let me reassure you that AMD's new Llano APU, the A8-3500, is every bit as capable as an Intel Core i5. Its graphics environment is superior over Intel's, and battery life, AMD's biggest concern, was more than satisfactory. It may not perform as well in hardcore tasks like video and photo editing, but its low price reflects these shortcomings. I would still recommend the Asus U56E-BBL5 because its slight premium is accompanied by a better looking design, more power, and better battery life.

The Gateway NV55S05u provides a good computing experience at a budget-friendly $579. It delivers better graphics performance than competing notebooks in its price range along with a modern white-and-silver design. Some may prefer the HP Pavilion g6sx because it offers better CPU performance in a lighter design--along with more color options. But overall, the NV55S05u is well suited for consumers who want an entertainment machine with a stylish design at an affordable price.

The landscape of budget laptops often looks like a police lineup of suspects: a muddy confusion of similar-looking faces and bodies. You could do a lot worse than the Gateway NV55S05u for a solid RAM/hard drive combination and an all-around decent processor in a 15-inch laptop, provided you can live with poor battery life.

Not surprisingly, when Best Buy offered the Gateway NV55C54u for $399, it sold out there in no time. Consumers should be able to find this laptop at other online retailers for $459, which is still a great deal. For $50 less than its closest competitor, the HP Pavilion g6, the Gateway provides slightly better performance, longer battery life, and a dedicated number pad. We prefer the design and larger touchpad of the HP, but overall the NV55C54u is one of the best notebook deals around.

The $499 Gateway NV57H54u offers solid performance and endurance along with one of the better-looking and more comfortable keyboards we've used in this price range. Gateway's aging NV platform is certainly starting to feel like updating. The NV55S07u-6344G50Mnrk does offer a quad core AMD processor which gives it better than expected graphics and the numeric keypad is something that many 15-inch laptops are dropping these days. The problem is that is the battery life is below much of the Intel based laptops in this price range and it lacks a USB 3.0 port which some of the Gateway NV series has included in the past.

Gateway's NV570P04u laptop really needs to be updated as the system feels very dated even though it does feature a touchscreen display. While it is relatively thin at just under 1.2-inches thick, it is still a fairly heavy system weight close to six pounds. Even with its weight, the system still exhibited a bit more flex than would have been desired.

Gateway: Gateway, Incorporated. is a computer hardware company based in California which develops, manufactures, supports, and markets a wide range of personal computers, computer monitors, servers, and computer accessories. AOL acquired Gateway.net, the online component of Gateway Inc., in 1999. 2007, Acer completed its acquisition of Gateway for approximately US$710 million. The market share outside of the US market is rather low.
In 2014 to 2016, Gateway did no longer belong to the Top 10 laptop manufacturers/distributors. Newer devices from Gateway are hardly reviewed by specialist media any longer (as of 2016).
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
ATI Radeon HD 3200: Onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip (on RS780M chipset) based on the HD 2400 graphics core. It also features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos. Beware: Under Windows XP the HD 3200 may have no 2D accelleration because of a driver problem.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
NVIDIA GeForce 310M: The GeForce 310M is the successor of the GeFore G210M and based on the same chip with very similar clock rates (shader speed +30MHz to 1530MHz).
ATI Radeon HD 4250: Onboard graphics card (in the RS880M chipset) for AMD processors with Avivo HD support and technically a higher clocked HD 4200.
AMD Radeon HD 6310: Integrated graphics card in the Zacate netbook processors (e.g. E-350 and E-240) featuring an UVD3 video decoder and no dedicated memory.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
AMD Radeon HD 6520G:
Integrated processor graphics card (in the A6-Series of Llano APUs) without dedicated graphics memory and only 320 of the 400 shader cores.
Intel HD Graphics 2500: In the desktop Ivy Bridge CPUs (Core ix-3xxx) integrated processor graphics card. The HD 2500 is the slower, GT1 called, part with less execution units (EUs) and only one texture sampler - compared to the GT2 HD Graphics 4000.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middle class DirectX 11 capable graphics card with a power consumption of about 15-20 Watt. Supports Eyevision (up to 6 monitors)
AMD Radeon HD 6620G: Integrated processor graphics card (in the A-Series of Llano APUs) without dedicated graphics memory.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T6500:
Entry level Penryn based dual-core CPU with a small 2MB level 2 cache and FSB800. Similar to the T6570 but without VT-x.
T6600: Entry level Core 2 Duo dual core processor with a small 2MB level 2 cache and without virtualization functions.
AMD Athlon X2:
QL-64:

Intel Core i5:
430M:
The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
AMD Phenom II X3:
N830: Mobile 3-core laptop processor based on the desktop Athlon II X3.
