Garmin unveils ultra-wide Drive GPS navigator with smartphone connectivity
While the older Garmin DriveSmart 76 ($227 on Amazon) was still equipped with a display in the typical 16:9 aspect ratio, the new Garmin Drive features an ultra-wide touchscreen in a 20:9 aspect ratio, available in either a 7.1-inch or 8.8-inch size, with the panel offering a resolution of 1,600 x 720 pixels in both cases.
The wider but less tall display is designed to obstruct the view through the windshield less than conventional navigation devices. The display shows not only the route but also stop signs, traffic lights, and speed limits. When the navigator is connected to a smartphone app, it can also access data from the Internet to display traffic, traffic jams, and the weather forecast. Charging stations for electric cars are not only displayed but can also be filtered by charging power.
Drivers of cars with internal combustion engines, on the other hand, can view current gas and diesel prices at gas stations. The Garmin Drive smartphone app also lets you conveniently plan routes on your phone and then transfer them to the navigation system. Alternatively, it is also possible to select a destination using voice control. Destinations such as hotels and restaurants are displayed directly along with TripAdvisor ratings. Garmin Drive can be used as a hands-free system for the connected smartphone.
Pricing and availability
The Garmin Drive GPS navigators are now available in the Garmin online store, either with a 7.1-inch display for $299 or with an 8.8-inch display for $349.
