A popular leaker has highlighted seven contestable areas where the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 could be seen as a superior flagship phone to the Apple iPhone 14. While some of the chosen Galaxy S23 specs seem clearly better for the average smartphone user, die-hard iPhone fans will still be able to pick plenty of holes in the selection.

Samsung and Apple attract very vociferous and loyal fans to their brand, so whenever either company releases a new premium flagship phone series there is always a heated discussion about if and how it is superior to the competitor’s latest offering. In this instance, leaker @TheGalox_ has fairly pitched the soon-to-be released Samsung Galaxy S23 against the Apple iPhone 14. The latter costs from US$799, which is the widely rumored price tag for the standard Galaxy S23 model, so in price terms the two phones are evenly matched. While the source doesn’t explicitly state that the Galaxy S23 is superior in these seven areas, it is the obvious implication made:

Apple iPhone 14 Samsung Galaxy S23
Processor A15 Bionic Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy
Rear cameras 12 MP + 12 MP 50 MP + 12 MP + 10 MP
Optical zoom N/A 3x
Display 6.1-in 60 Hz OLED 6.1-in 120 Hz AMOLED
Brightness 1,200 nits 1,750 nits
RAM 6 GB 8 GB
Battery 3,279 mAh 3,900 mAh

Sure, 8 GB RAM looks greater than 6 GB RAM, but it’s always a difficult contest when pitting an Android smartphone against an iOS-driven iPhone. The latter has native software built specifically for the device and is therefore optimized to run fluidly without the need for more RAM. This same efficiency also counts for the smaller battery size, with iPhones requiring less energy than their Android rivals to perform similar tasks. A dimmer display also provides for longer battery life, so it is down to the individual user’s preferences here in regard to brightness. However, it can be generally said that an AMOLED panel is better than an OLED unit and the Galaxy S23 also has the higher refresh-rate advantage.

Again, on the surface, the iPhone 14 looks inferior to the Galaxy S23 for the cameras. While MP counts can be mostly discounted, a 3x optical zoom is certainly superior to no optical zoom, with the Samsung device sporting a handy 10 MP telephoto lens along with its 50 MP main unit and 12 MP ultra-wide sensor. So, the Samsung Galaxy S23 triumphs here, at least on paper, as there is still a wait to see the production quality of images under controlled testing. The most contestable part is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy vs A15 Bionic conclusion: In a recent gaming test, a non-tweaked SD 8 Gen 2 (Xiaomi 13 Pro) offered greater average FPS output than both the Apple A15 and Apple A16, so the S23 should win this round.

But look deeper into the same comparison and it's possible to see a typical Android vs. iOS contest: Brute force vs. elegant efficiency. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 churns out 59.4 FPS and also remains cooler than the other chips tested, and it is measured managing 10.8 FPS per watt. However, the A15 in the iPhone 14 Plus and the A16 in the iPhone 14 Pro Max produce greater efficiency per watt with 11.3 FPS and 11.8 FPS, respectively. It is a quite subjective task to choose the more superior device out of the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Apple iPhone 14, but anyone with US$799 to spend on a brand-new smartphone will at least be able to choose between likely two of the best phones on the market.
