The world's first production EV powered by vehicle with solid-state battery will be released in the US this current quarter with up to 370 miles of range.
The TS Pro motorbyke by Verge Motorcycles comes with a NACS port, too, so that it can be topped up in just 35 minutes on Tesla's Superchargers.
While there are many EV battery makers that have moved from prototype solid-state batteries to pilot production and are even developing third-gen packs with up to 700 Wh/kg energy density, actual electric vehicles powered by batteries with solid electrolyte are few and far between.
What's more, the current electric vehicles with solid-state batteries - from the pricey Mercedes EQS to the budget FAW Hongqi - are prototypes for performance testing, with actual mass production by Toyota and the like pegged for 2027.
Verge TS Pro solid-state battery bike range and specs
Enter Verge Motorcycles, which stacked 5 kWh all-solid-state battery cells to create a production bike that can cover up to 370 miles on a charge for the version with 33.3 kWh pack. The cheaper 20.2 kWh variant has an EPA range of up to 217 miles.
Verge chose the solid-state battery technology because it is inherently safer in an accident and offers double the energy density hence range on a charge of current Li-ion batteries with volatile liquid electrolyte. It is much more expensive, too, making it suitable for applications that need compact packs like drones, robots, and, well, bikes, so it remains to be seen how much will the TS Pro cost when it launches in Q1.
In the US, the Verge TS Pro comes with a NACS port so that it can take advantage of Tesla's sprawling Supercharger network, and can top up at speeds of up to 200 kW, adding 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes on the pile. The solid-state battery in the TS Pro is designed to last the lifetime of the motorcycle, but is not its only unique feature.
The TS Pro sports a chainless design with hubless motor in the rear wheel that delivers 737 lb-ft of torque and accelerates it from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The chianless drivetrain and modular design makes the TS Pro easy to service, while Verge will push OTA updates of its software to deliver new driving modes and optimize performance. The first production electric vehicle with solid-state battery will be available in seven flashy colors, and about the only mystery before it lands is the release price in the US.
