Fairphone appears to be on the verge of expanding its product line with a pair of over-ear headphones. Sporting a similar colour scheme to the Fairphone 4, the Fairbuds XL is expected to follow the company's ethos of using recycled materials where possible. Theoretically, the Fairbuds XL could show move the needle towards reducing electronic waste in the wireless audio market.
However, it is unclear for now how repairable the Fairbuds XL are for now and how it compares against other current over-ear headphones. Based on leaked information, the Fairbuds will retail for €249 and will be available in black or green colourways. Seemingly, the headphones feature removable ear cups, although this alone would not make the Fairbuds XL more repairable than its peers.
Instead, we would expect Fairphone to sell replacement batteries and drivers, among other spare parts. Additionally, WinFuture notes that active noise cancellation support is 'likely'. In saying that, it remains to be seen what the device's two physical buttons are for, nor whether there are gesture-based volume and media controls. A release date is unknown for now, but the release of a Vimeo video and listings on various online retailers suggests that Fairphone is close to making an announcement.
