FM radio support might seem an obsolete feature, especially when it comes to the flagships currently on the market but it is not, even in markets like Canada and the US. The main reason is that data traffic is, for most customers, quite expensive, and it is always better to listen to FM radio stations than to stream some music, at least cost-wise. Unfortunately, those who acquired the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ expecting to get fully functional FM radio capabilities were sorely disappointed.
The statement that NextRadio sent to PiunikaWeb after being asked to confirm the FM radio-related issues reads the following: "The unlocked S9 and S9+ are supposed to be FM-enabled, but we’ve recently discovered that they are not. Samsung has confirmed that this will be corrected in the next system update. At this time, they are not able to provide a date for the release."
On the other hand, it seems that carrier Galaxy S9 units are fine from this point of view. According to an XDA user, flashing a carrier firmware on an unlocked Galaxy S9 handset allows the device to provide the entire range of FM radio capabilities without any glitches. Now, remains to see how long will it take for the update to arrive, since it can be quite frustrating to pay for a fully-featured flagship and to receive a partially functional one instead.
