Update: Motorola is now officially sending out the Oreo update to the Moto G4 Plus. It's an update to Android 8.1 Oreo and doubles up as the December security patch. This, thankfully, brings the episode to a hearty conclusion.
Thanks, Moto.

Earlier this year, we published a piece on Motorola failing to provide the Oreo update for the Moto G4 Plus like it promised. It would appear that the company has decided to make good on its words, and is now sending the update to the device. And it’s not just the G4 Plus either; the Moto G4 is also receiving the update to Oreo.
For some backstory on the whole fiasco, Motorola released the Moto G4 phones back in 2016 and promised that the G4 Plus would receive two major updates: Nougat and Oreo. A year later, when Oreo was unveiled, the company backtracked on its promise by not including the G4 Plus in its Oreo update roadmap.
That caused something of a media outcry, culminating in Motorola once again reasserting its promise to deliver Oreo to the device. Sadly, over a year after that, the G4 Plus still had not received Oreo, leading to the aforementioned piece by us back in January.
Thankfully, the company is now doing as it promised. Last month, there were reports that the G4 Plus was receiving the Oreo update in the US, but that proved to be mostly unsubstantiated. This time around, though, there’s solid proof of the OTA, as users of the Moto G4 are confirming receipt of the Oreo update—one that doubles up as the December 2018 security patch.
While we’re yet to receive word on the G4 Plus, we believe the device should also be getting the update right about now, since it’s the more expensive device, and the one Motorola actually promised Oreo for in the first place.
