It has been more than a year since the launch of the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, and there are already plans for a successor which is expected to arrive as the Motorola Edge 70 Ultra. However, ahead of its arrival, Motorola has begun rolling out a major OS upgrade to the Edge 50 Ultra.
When it was announced in April 2024, Motorola shipped the Edge 50 Ultra with Android 14 out of the box, with a promise for up to three major Android upgrades. The Android 15 update began rolling out to the phone in December 2024, and now, Motorola has begun rolling out Android 16 to the device.
This leaves one more Android OS upgrade for the 2024 flagship that cost €1,000 at launch (curr. available on Amazon.de for €607.90) which is disappointing when compared to rivals such as Samsung and Google who both offer seven years of Android updates for several of their devices.
The Android 16 update began rolling out first to users in Brazil in batches. It is expected to arrive in other regions such as Europe and India afterwards. The update arrives with firmware version W1UV36H.61-15 and comes in at 1.64GB in size. Below is a translation of the changelog:
- More expressive design
- Protection against malicious apps
- Improved compatibility with LE Audio devices
- More transparent background activities
- Android security update
While there's only one more OS upgrade for the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, the device is scheduled to receive security updates until April 2028.
