Dragon Quest will get much quest-ier.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, which is set to release at the end of this month, will add some questlines, encounters, and characters to the original Dragon Quest game (also known as Dragon Warrior in the United States). Per publisher Square Enix, the additions are intended to further flesh out the story of the original Dragon Quest game and better connect the first two entries to the third Dragon Quest game, which was remade last year.
The new additions include Rubiss, a character integral to the story of both Dragon Quest II and Dragon Quest III. Rubiss, who is a creator goddess in the Dragon Quest mythos, does not appear at all in the original title and is only briefly mentioned in the smartphone remake of the game. However, the HD-2D remake will introduce a quest in which the hero must seek out Rubiss and the faeries to enlist their help.
The remake will also introduce new characters to the original title (including a sage well-versed in curing particular diseases and dwarves) that were not present in any other version. Additionally, there are a handful of new dungeons for heroes to explore and new events where monsters can invade towns.
Considering how barebones the original Dragon Quest was when it was released on the Famicom and Nintendo Entertainment System almost 40 years ago (and how simple other remakes and ports have remained), the new additions may be a welcome breath of fresh air for seasoned adventurers.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will launch on Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC (via Steam and the Microsoft Store) on October 30.
