Dell Latitude 3440
More and more brands push out affordable budget laptops. For most manufacturers the challenge is to decide which feature to economize on, and which to spend more on. Dell has managed to produce quite a balanced device in the Latitude 3440, pleasing many users by including an Intel Haswell Core i5-4200U processor. Intel's Haswell line of processors improved power consumption and decreased heat development.
This low power dual core CPU with Hyper Threading clocks at 1.6 GHz up to 2.6 GHz, integrates and HD 4400 graphics chip and features 6 GB dual channel 1.6 Mhz RAM. A Seagate Momentus 750 GB hard disk is used as storage device. The battery gives an impressive usage time of between 5-6 hours, made possible in part by the low energy demands of the hardware. This long battery life will no doubt make it suitable for those who need to work outdoors or access their laptops in an emergency.
The one compromise Dell has made on this device is the small 14 inch screen size. However, since this laptop is not aimed at photography enthusiasts but at businessmen, the small matte screen should suffice.

Average Score:
An asocial office playboy. Dell presents the successor of its Vostro 3460 as an affordable office notebook in a snazzy aluminum body. The dedicated graphics also make the test version interesting for gaming with friends. So much is clear from the beginning: The balancing act succeeds, with only its mobility and endowment of ports failing to convince.

The latest Latitude is designed for work rather than play. It impresses in several key areas: the Haswell processor has more than enough application grunt, improved graphics performance and decent battery life. The keyboard and touchpad are excellent, and it's a slim, light and sturdy machine ideal for carrying around.

The Latitude 3440 is designed for work rather than play, and that means its talents lie in certain keys areas: the Haswell processor delivers reasonable application and games performance and excellent battery life, and the keyboard and touchpad are excellent. It’s one of the slimmest and lightest machines in this group, too, but it’s also got the best build quality. The middling screen and speakers count against the Dell, but it excels in more key areas than any other machine here – and that makes it a worthy all-round winner.

And with the missing support for an M.2 SSD, which has usually become a standard nowadays, the Latitude 3580 is bound to lose to its competitors like the Lenovo ThinkPad E570, the Lenovo ThinkPad L570 or HP’s new ProBook 450 G5. In fact, the older ProBook 450 G4 is a much better option as well. Other similarly priced alternatives would be Acer’s TravelMate P4 TMP449 or even the affordable Latitude 15 3570 will do a better job.
