Reviews for the Dell G16 7620
Dell's latest midrange gaming laptop isn't afraid to be bigger and heavier than others in order to squeeze more performance from the Intel 12th gen CPU and GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. Nonetheless, core temperatures could still be a little cooler across the board.

If what you need is a gaming laptop with raw, unadulterated performance and nothing else, then the Dell G16 is a great gaming laptop without a horrible price tag. It’s not the most portable laptop, but what it lacks in style it makes up for in substance. Plus, it’s modular enough to repair and upgrade, saving you money in the long run. If you’re looking for a gaming laptop that’s more multipurpose, you may consider looking at something like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, which has really good performance and battery life in a smaller form factor for about the same price. On the other hand, the Acer Nitro 5 has similar specs and a marginal decrease in performance compared to the Dell G16 for a bit less money (but neither laptop has stellar battery life). The Dell G16 is a great match for gamers who will be at their desks most of the time. If you decide to buy the Dell G16, remember to shop around and check the various available configurations available, since they like to discount the pricier ones.

The Dell G16 isn’t much to look at, with its mostly plastic design that’s both boring and bulky. The high-resolution, 16-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio lends the laptop utility beyond gaming and this added versatility improves the system’s value proposition. For gaming alone, however, it offers tremendous value as one of the most powerful RTX 3060-based laptops we’ve tested. Midrange buyers who want the best performance for their dollar and don’t need the flashiest design ought to consider the Dell G16.

If you buy a less-expensive gaming laptop, you'll have less room to grow when future generations of games are released. The laptop will feel dated that much sooner, whereas a bigger investment, for example in a gaming laptop with Nvidia 3070 or 3080 graphics, could conceivably last you years longer. But a good budget gaming laptop, especially considering the sale prices mentioned above, can also be a smarter bet, depending how much you want to spend and how heavy of a gamer you are. I'd feel fine using an Nvidia 3060 laptop like our G16 for at least the next few years. A budget laptop with a 3050 GPU is more of a short-term investment, but for $799 as tested, or $899 with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB hard drive, it's a great value and a great starter gaming laptop.

The Dell G16 isn't the fastest or most sophisticated gaming laptop we've seen, but it's a decent performer for the price. A better webcam and brighter screen would bump up our review rating, without doubt, while opting for the RTX 3070 Ti GPU would move it to the top rank of affordable gaming speedsters. That would perhaps even earn it an Editors' Choice award, but alas that's not the case here. Even as is, the Dell G16 is a fine example of today's 16-inch alternatives to traditional 15.6-inch gaming machines.

The Dell G16 is a great gaming laptop for those who need a powerhouse in both productivity and gaming performance without breaking the bank. If you can look past underwhelming color depth and subpar battery life, it’s absolutely worth the asking price.
