If we could be sure of Costco's extending its price cut for the Legion 5 15IAH7H from $1,549.99 to $1,099.99, this would be a five-star review with "Buy It" in blinking red letters. Even at its everyday price, however, this Lenovo is a genuine find, a not-svelte but not-too-hefty gaming rig with sharper-than-usual screen resolution and performance that tops most GeForce RTX 3060 laptops. It's a midrange system that can run with some high-end models.

The 2022 Lenovo Legion 5i is a fresh design with cleaner looks and improved ergonomics, as well as an updated set of specs, now running at higher power than before and more capable in demanding loads and in games. On top of that, Lenovo were able to polish some of my nits with the previous 5 generations. At the same time, this remains a full-size laptop with only average-quality screens, so it's highly competitive in its mid-tier class, but not necessarily the ideal option for everyone.

The Legion 5i Pro breaks the notion that a gaming laptop cannot look good while doing its heavy lifting. The laptop is a beast in performance and can do everything from usual office work to heavy gaming without breaking a sweat. Its professional and minimalist look also adds to its appeal. I do think some improvements are needed in the speaker and battery-life department. But besides that, Lenovo does not let any flaws show. If you are a gamer who is looking for a laptop that can play more or less every mainstream game smoothly and look good while doing it, you should definitely consider it. But it does cost Rs. 1,57,000 for all that and over Rs. 2 lakh if you want the RTX 3070 Ti and Intel i9-12900H upgrade. That is a big amount and I'm not sure if the extra CPU power is worth the price. However, if your usage requires that extra bit of power, this device might be beneficial for you. But if not, you can also look at HP Omen 16, Acer Nitro 5 and ROG Strix G17 who more or less offer similar specifications to the base model but different design aesthetics to choose from.

The Lenovo Legion 5i is a competent mid-range gaming laptop that struggles to throw aside the compromises its affordable pricing demands. It does the job, but it’s a bit boring. Performance is the highlight. Mid-range gaming laptops often perform well for their price and the Legion 5i seems a bit ahead of this already impressive pack. This is as quick a gaming laptop as you’ll find without upgrading to RTX 3070 or RTX 3080 hardware, something you’ll only find in laptops that are at least a few hundred dollars more expensive. However, Acer’s Nitro 5 is a slightly better value, offering almost identical performance for even less. The rest of the laptop is a cost-effective shell for the hardware. Aside from its connectivity, which is excellent, nothing about the laptop’s quality or feature set puts it ahead of the crowd. But with an as-tested price of $1,549.99 and some almost identical hardware configurations dipping to $1,399.99, that’s a compromise many gamers will be willing to accept.

Overall, the Legion 5i is a good mid-tier gaming laptop that won’t disappoint you in gaming and also other intense use cases. It is a full-sized laptop, slightly oversized and a bit heavy at 2.4kg. It also comes with a chunky power brick, though you can use a type C charger.

The Lenovo Legion 5i is a gaming laptop at a relatively accessible price and with quite usable specifications. But it doesn’t make the headlines. In the price range, you have to make some compromises, but in this case, they are not so well chosen. The processor is downright excellent, and the high-resolution and fast screen could provide the basis for great games. Which it does. But despite the fact that in previous tests I’ve complained time and again about an outdated Full HD resolution on gaming monitors, I’d rather sacrifice the WQHD screen for a snappier graphics card. That doesn’t make the Legion 5i a bad machine, but for the price you can find more successful configurations. In fact, you can do that at Lenovo too, which regularly offers just the discount that would make it a good buy.

Like previous models in the Legion lineup, the Lenovo Legion 5i is a powerful laptop delivering a strong design and all the performance you need for gaming. And the ergonomics, display and connectivity make it a little more versatile than some rival games machines. Rivals such as the Acer Nitro 5 2022 offer a slightly stronger spec at a similar price point, but the Legion includes a better, high-resolution screen and a more sophisticated style. If you’re looking for a gaming laptop on which you can also get some work done, you should put the Legion 5i near the top of your list.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
