While Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular franchises in the world, some titles could have had a different destiny. Dan Houser recently spoke about GTA 3 and revealed that no one, except the developers, was expecting this title. However, it was a huge success, becoming the best-selling game in 2001 in the United States and the second best-selling game in 2002 behind Vice City.
Dan Houser spoke about this on the show Sunday Brunch. He was asked if he thought he could take video games to the next level, and to answer this question, he used GTA 3 as an example:
"I think all of the team felt with GTA 3, which was the big breakthrough one in 2001, and we were very much running out of money at the time as a company. I think all the team thought, 'this could be amazing. There's something really magical about this’.”
He also pointed out that there are many innovations in this game. However, GTA 3 was not as eagerly awaited as the other games in the franchise:
"Until it came out, no one outside of our company was very excited by it. So that came out just after 9/11 in late 2001, and as it came out, people suddenly got more excited about it."
Of course, GTA 6 is currently the most eagerly awaited game in the world. And it seems almost impossible that this could happen again for a game from Rockstar Games. But it will be necessary for the license to continue offering games and content that appeal to players.
