DJI Action 3: Early signs of next-generation action camera emerge with possible release date
DJI may have released the Avata and Mini 3 Pro drones this year, but the company is not stopping there. According to @DealsDrone, DJI is planning to launch a successor to the Action 2, which debuted last October. To recap, the Action 2 arrived with a redesign compared to the original Osmo Action, a GoPro Hero lookalike. Unveiled for US$399, the Action 2 has a modular design and a much smaller footprint than the Osmo Action.
It is worth noting that the image above is of the original Osmo Action, not the Action 3. However, @DealsDrone claims that the Action 3 and the Osmo Action will look almost identical. Unfortunately, the leaker has not commented on why DJI has abandoned the Action 2's form factor. If that is the case, then DJI's various Action 2 accessories may become redundant after just one generation. Potentially, the switch in form factor could be to combat overheating, which is an issue with the Action 2.
The Hero 10 Black suffers from similar overheating problems, although GoPro insists that it has taken steps to mitigate these. Reputedly, the Action 3 will arrive in mid-September, seemingly on its own and not part of a wider release. In other words, DJI could be two or three weeks from announcing the Action 3 and may get the jump on GoPro with the Hero 11 Black. Incidentally, there have been no signs of the Hero 11 Black yet. Pricing for the Action 3 has not leaked yet either, but we imagine that it will be within the ballpark of the Action 2.
