Tesla's pricey Cybertruck currently can't take advantage of the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) option, and will only be getting FSD with the 12.5 update that is now testing at Chuck’s Unprotected Left Turn.

UPDATE: The FSD 12.5 update that will come to the Cybertruck is now rolling out to early access owners without the highway end-to-end and sunglasses support just yet.

After a Tesla Model Y was recently spotted with an elaborate LiDAR contraption on top, it is now time for the Cybertruck to don LiDAR, too.

At first, the Model Y with LiDAR was thought to be doing tests for Tesla's Cybercab service with the standalone Robotaxi, but now that one has been perched on the Cybertruck, the rumors have switched in an FSD update direction.

The next grand FSD 12.5 version is expected to finally merge Tesla's highway and city driving stacks and add support for driving with sunglasses on. Another indication of how significant the FSD 12.5 update is, is the fact that it will be the first FSD version available for the Cybertruck.

Tesla let the $100,000 Cybertruck out of the proverbial gate without the FSD purchase option, even though it comes with the full power of its latest and greatest Hardware 4.0 suite, complete with upgraded processor, as well as more and higher resolution cameras, including one in the front bumper.

It seemingly needed to merge the two disparate self-driving stacks and do some probes with the Cybertruck out and about in the real world, and the LiDAR can only help with testing precision.

In fact, despite scoffing at their usability and gloating over XPeng's switch to its Vision camera-only approach to assisted driving, Tesla recently bought a boatload of LiDARs, and they have now started popping up on test vehicles.

Currently, Tesla is testing its self-driving system at Chuck's Unprotected Left Turn site and Elon Musk confirmed that this is a 12.5 version test, indicating that the release of FSD for the Cybertruck is nearing.
