A new Tesla Model S with HW3 vs. Tesla Model Y with HW4 comparison video has been put together and posted by AI DRIVR, who managed to get footage from both vehicles that showed nearly identical views in both static and moving images. The poster highlights a couple of important notes for the comparison, such as that dashcam footage from both vehicles was compressed despite the MP differences (HW3: 1.2 MP; HW4: 5 MP) and neither of the videos have been tinkered with to give any false impressions.
Surprisingly, the Tesla Model Y (2023) vs Tesla Model S (2018) comparison video is actually more revealing than might be expected. While the Autopilot Hardware 4 computer might not blow away Autopilot Hardware 3 in the first comparison (from the side while moving), later images really start to demonstrate the obvious gap between generations. The first instance of this is at a red light, which looks like a blurry orangey-yellow on HW3 but is clearly red with HW4.
Other striking differences to note throughout the video (posted below) are how visible road signs and license plates are with the Tesla Model Y’s HW4 system and how the fish-eye view at the rear offers greater visibility (and therefore enhanced safety). There are two more standouts: The variable message sign that is just scattered lights for HW3 but is (importantly considering its content) legible for HW4 and the amazing differences between the camera capabilities of the new Tesla Model Y and the older Tesla Model S when it comes to night driving.
