A Porsche Boxster test mule has been spotted charging at a German EV charging station, revealing an impressive 150+ kW sustained charge rate and providing a reasonable estimate of the ultimate battery capacity of the upcoming electric roadster.

Ever since Porsche released the Taycan range of electric vehicles, speculation has been floating around about upcoming electric Porsche models. Reports later confirmed that Porsche was developing an electric Boxster for 2024 release. A sighting of a prototype of the Boxster EV at an EnBW fast charging station, posted by @Strombock on Twitter, has revealed some interesting tidbits about the upcoming electric sports car's battery capacity and charging capabilities.

In the video clip, the EnBW charger's charging curve can be seen holding steady at a 150-162 kW charge rate between around 40% and 80% capacity. After that, the charge rate falls off significantly. This is in contrast to other EVs that may start out at a higher charge rate but end up dropping steadily throughout the duration of the charge.

What this means is that the upcoming Porsche Boxster EV should have a higher average charge rate than many other EVs, and that high-performance output to the motors should be more consistent than its competition. The charge curve also allows us to make a fairly decent estimation of the Boxster EV's battery capacity.

Rough estimation based on the charging curve pictured in the Twitter video reveals that the electric Porsche Boxster charged roughly 45% of its battery capacity during its stint at the charger. Given that it managed to recuperate 39.39 kWh, it looks like Porsche's Boxster EV will have somewhere in the region of 80 – 85 kWh of battery capacity.

Whether this is gross or usable battery capacity isn't clear, but it appears to be orbiting the same rough capacity as the Taycan, which has between 71 kWh and 83.7 kWh of usable battery, depending on the variant.

While fans of the Porsche Boxster may protest, citing weight and handling concerns, it is worth pointing out that Porsche will likely offer its new EV with different battery configurations, much like the Taycan. The low centre of gravity of an EV battery also means Porsche could probably get away with a heavier car than the ICE version of the Boxster without sacrificing agility and handling, although wider, sportier tyres will mean reduced efficiency.

It's unlikely that Porsche would bungle the driving dynamics of a compact sports car like the Boxster, but how the Boxster turns out remains to be seen. Fortunately, the estimated arrival date of the 2025 Porsche Boxster is Q3 2024.
