After xAI recently came under criticism for the introduction of customizable 3D avatars in its AI chatbot Grok 4 because of the perceived sexualized portrayal of some characters, among other things, CEO Elon Musk has now announced an alternative for children. On July 19, 2025, Musk announced via his official account on X that they are working hard on a new app with exclusively child-friendly content. Musk wrote: „We’re going to make Baby Grok @xAI, an app dedicated to kid-friendly content.“
Musk is yet to provide details on the implementation or how it differs technically from the existing Grok chatbot. Grok has become infamously known for providing provocative or colloquial answers upon user request, which is an aspect that is considered problematic in an educational context. Hence, the development of Baby Grok can be seen as a response to this criticism.
The announcement has been positively received on social media for the most part. Many users expressed their enthusiasm for the idea of an AI application specifically designed for children. Some stated that they had previously denied their children access to Grok. Baby Grok could be a suitable alternative.
The original Grok chatbot was released in 2023 as a competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Meta's Llama, and Google's Gemini. xAI recently introduced a new version, Grok 4, which, according to Musk, can answer academic questions at the PhD level. At the same time, the entrepreneur emphasized that although Grok has sound technical knowledge, he occasionally lacks everyday logic – a point that will probably get special attention in the development of a child-friendly version.
