The Canon Ixus 285 HS A is a refreshed version of the original Ixus 285 HS released back in 2016. The only notable new feature here is a microSD card slot, which replaces the standard SD card slot found on the earlier model. The new camera still comes with a mini USB port, which is used exclusively for data transfer. Charging the battery requires removing it from the device.
Canon appears to have dropped the Wi-Fi module, as the new model no longer supports wireless image transfer to a computer or a PictBridge printer. Otherwise, the core hardware remains largely unchanged from the 2016 version, including the dated Canon Digic 4+ processor and a 20.2 MP 1/2.3” CMOS sensor. Canon has fitted the camera with a 25-300 mm equivalent zoom lens, which delivers 12x optical zoom.
Due to the lens' modest maximum aperture of f/3.6 to f/7.0, potential buyers shouldn’t expect exceptionally high image quality in low-light conditions. Moreover, the ageing sensor and image processor also limit the camera’s ability to keep pace with modern mid-range smartphones. Considering compact digicams with zoom lenses still have their place in today's world, it’s a shame that Canon hasn’t given the Ixus 285 HS A a more substantial upgrade.
Price and availability
The Canon Ixus 285 HS A will launch first in the US under the name PowerShot 360 HS A for $379. For comparison, the original model debuted in 2016 at $209, but was recently listed at $359.
