Canon officially launched the EOS R1 and R5 Mark II mirrorless cameras today. The EOS R1 boasts a new autofocus system, exceptional speed, and robust weather sealing, while the EOS R5 Mark II offers a powerful sensor, high-resolution video recording, and improved low-light autofocus. Both cameras are expected to be available in the US in Fall 2024 (EOS R1) and August 2024 (EOS R5 Mark II) starting at $6,299 and $4,299 respectively.

Canon today unveiled the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, professional-grade mirrorless cameras. The company did a commendable job of keeping any leaks away from the internet, with the first renders leaking only one day before the launch. These new Canon cameras boast a new imaging platform and a whole lot of impressive features.

The EOS R1 takes the crown as Canon's new flagship camera, targeting news and sports photographers with its super-fast autofocus system, thanks to the Accelerated Capture imaging platform. This platform consists of a new processor – the DIGIC Accelerator – along with the DIGIC X image processor and newly developed high-speed image sensors featured on both the EOS R1 and R5 Mark II.

The R1 has a robust weather-sealed body, and features like a novel Cross Type AF system for accurate subject tracking in challenging environments, a silent electronic shutter with autofocus tracking capable of up to 40 frames per second, and a 24.2-megapixel sensor with in-camera image upscaling to a remarkable 96 megapixels. Additionally, the EOS R1 caters to videographers with 6K RAW video recording at 60 frames per second, 4K at 120 frames per second, and Full HD at 240 frames per second.

The EOS R5 Mark II builds upon the success of its predecessor, targeting creative storytellers and hybrid users who prioritize image quality, high-res video recording, and improved low-light autofocus performance. The camera features a powerful 45-megapixel stacked CMOS sensor, an electronic shutter with autofocus tracking reaching up to 30 frames per second, and the ability to capture 8K RAW video footage at 60 frames per second from the full sensor width. The EOS R5 Mark II also offers 12-bit internal RAW recording and 4K video at up to 120 frames per second.

The EOS R1 is expected to be available in the Fall of 2024, with an estimated retail price of $6,299.00 in the United States. The EOS R5 Mark II will be available earlier in August 2024, with an estimated retail price of $4,299.00 for the camera body only. A kit with the RF 24-105mm F/4L IS USM lens will also be available for $5,399.00. Optional battery grips are available for purchase separately, with the BG-R20 priced at $349.99, the BG-R20EP at $499.99, and the CF-R20EP at $399.99. Both cameras come with Canon's 5-year warranty when purchased from an authorized reseller. Pre-orders for the EOS R5 Mark II begin on July 17, 2024.
