Bad news, Blizzard fans: BlizzCon 2021 has officially been cancelled.
In a statement to the Blizzard community, BlizzCon Executive Producer Saralyn Smith said that ongoing restrictions about in-person gatherings (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) have made BlizzCon untenable:
The ongoing complexities and uncertainties of the pandemic have impacted our ability to properly move forward on many of these fronts, and ultimately we’re now past the point where we’d be able to develop the kind of event we’d want to create for you in November.
Smith said that Blizzard will be holding an event in early 2022 to make up for BlizzCon’s cancellation. This event will combine an online show with small in-person gatherings.
As BlizzCon is hosted in California, it must abide by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidelines for in-person gatherings. As of press time, California restricts indoor gatherings to either 50% of a building’s capacity or 50 people, whichever is fewer, and outdoor gatherings to 100 people. If a county is identified as a Moderate, Substantial, or Widespread risk (as defined by the CDPH), meetings are more heavily restricted.
