Auteur typewriter combines e-ink display with mechanical keyboard

At first glance, Auteur is somewhat reminiscent of the Freewrite Smart Typewriter ($699 on Amazon), although Auteur does not offer Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Instead, completed texts can only be transferred via USB-C.
At the heart of Auteur is a 6-inch e-ink display with a matte surface that can be easily read even in the sun. A dark mode, in which white text is displayed on a black background, is intended to make writing in low light more comfortable, but the manufacturer has not yet confirmed whether the display offers a frontlight. The lower half of the typewriter is occupied by a 60 percent mechanical keyboard that combines Kailh switches with durable PBT keycaps, but the device does not have a backlit keyboard.
Power is supplied via an internal battery, which should enable a runtime of "over" six hours, charging is handled via USB-C. The hardware is based on the InkPlate 6 Motion platform, which uses a mainboard with STM32H743 microcontroller and ESP32-C3 co-processor. With a weight of 1.36 kilograms, the typewriter is about as heavy as an average 14-inch laptop. The manufacturer emphasizes that no subscription is required to use it.
Pricing and availability
The Auteur e-ink typewriter is to be financed "soon" on Crowd Supply, but the manufacturer has not yet confirmed any further details on the price or the start of the crowdfunding campaign.
