Reviews for the Asus ZenFone 8

85.6% Asus ZenFone 8 smartphone in review: Compact and powerful | Notebookcheck
Asus already shows on paper that a powerful configuration can also be packed into a small smartphone with the Zenfone 8. We will find out what it is capable of in the end in our review.
71% ZenFone 8 review: Asus' small but mighty phone hits the mark
Source: CNet English
Asus is betting a small phone will make a big impact. It bills its new midrange ZenFone 8 as the "ultimate compact Android phone." The ZenFone 8 has a crisp 5.9-inch AMOLED display, respectable battery life, dependable cameras, stereo speakers, and powerful internals that by some measures rivals the $1,200 Galaxy S21 Ultra's performance. All this is crammed into a lightweight and slender chassis, making it one of the most compact 5G phones around.

A Phone Camera To Flip For: ASUS Zenfone 8 / 8 Flip Review
Source: MrMobile English
If you’re looking for something a little different when it comes to your laptops and smartphones, ASUS has gotta be one of your go-tos. Using the company’s dual-screen laptops over the past couple years has changed what I expect from a mobile computer … and the latest ROG Phone is so well-equipped, it tempted even a non-gamer like myself. Compared to those envelope-pushers, ASUS’s two new Zenfones are far tamer offerings. That’s because they’re trying to appeal to a more mainstream audience, while still offering features other manufacturers have mostly written off. The question is whether either one goes far enough.

Asus Zenfone 8
Source: PC Mag English
The Zenfone 8 looks promising, but pricing will play the biggest role in determining our recommendation. At $599, it's a pretty good deal; at $799, not so much. Carrier support is also something to take into consideration, and we want to see if Asus makes a commitment to multi-year OS updates. We'll be tracking the release of the Zenfone 8 here, so check back soon for more details and a full review when the phone becomes available. In the meantime, our pick for the best small phone remains the iPhone 12 mini.

If it wasn’t for the disappointing battery life, I’d have no issues recommending the Asus Zenfone 8 to anyone after a compact smartphone. Besides that, it’s a beefy device with strong media chops and a dependable everyday camera, packed into a diminutive form factor that won’t give you an unsightly bulge.

The Asus Zenfone 8 is truly compact and somehow still manages to pack in impressive hardware. It may not look like anything special straight out of the box, but it really does have a stunning display and flagship-level performance.

There's a lot to like about this compact phone - which will suit many looking for a smaller flagship. There's a great display, quality build, and good cameras. But it heats up quickly under load so it's not for gamers, while the fingerprint scanner is irritating in use.

The Asus Zenfone 8 is a solid flagship phone at a sub-flagship price, though inevitably there are compromises: there’s no telephoto lens or wireless charging, and it misses out on its predecessor’s novel flip camera that let the rear lenses rotate forward to take selfie shots. You can still get that camera in the limited-release Asus Zenfone 8 Flip, but the regular Zenfone 8 delivers top-tier specs at the most affordable price since the OnePlus 6T.

90% Asus Zenfone 8 review: The best small Android phone, hands-down
Source: Tom's Guide English
The Asus Zenfone 8 is a great phone, though its availability might leave some confused. But the hardware is excellent, the software is great, and the cameras perform way better than expected (especially after the extreme disappointment I had with the ROG Phone 5’s cameras). You’re getting a ton of phone with the Zenfone 8 and it’s definitely the best small Android phone, handily beating the Pixel 5 in every way except camera performance.

Hands on: Asus Zenfone 8 Review

By not following the blueprint of pretty much every other Android phone, Asus has found a niche for the Zenfone 8. If you’re after an iPhone 12-sized Android phone with top-tier specs then this device is shaping up to be an excellent option.

90% ASUS Zenfone 8 review: Small phone, big specs, surprising price
Source: Android Central English
ASUS's first shot at a compact Android flagship is one of the best small, high-end phones you can buy. Between its fast performance, two capable cameras, and a pocket-friendly form factor, this is a fantastic overall package. But you may be waiting longer for Android OS updates, and there's no wireless charging.

The Asus Zenfone 8 is a rare occurrence. It's a unique phone with a niche of its own, but this wasn't enough for Asus. They've built an enthusiast's smartphone with brilliant execution and a laundry list of features you rarely see all in one place, not even in larger devices. Much like with its ROG Phone lineup of gaming phones, the Zenfone 8 is a non-compromise device built from the ground up to excel in all important aspects of smartphone operation.

While I’m sure Asus would be happy to own this market by itself, I hope this portends more small(ish) Android flagships. I love using the gigantic Galaxy S21 Ultra, but the Zenfone 8 proves that there is no reason why you need to sacrifice performance for a more compact design. The Asus Zenfone 8 has earned itself a place among the best smartphones available today.

The ASUS Zenfone 8 Hands-On Review: A New Compact Direction
Source: AnandTech English
Finally, there’s the continued issue of availability and limited releases depending on country and markets. I had asked ASUS about their recent track-record of having extremely slow roll-outs, with users sometimes waiting months to be able to purchase the phones in their specific region or country. Similarly, the Zenfone 8 series don’t have any concrete sell date or more specific pricing beyond the European start prices showcased in the above slide. ASUS had replied that they’re aiming to do better this year, but again shying away from disclosing any more concrete per-country availability information.

The ASUS ZenFone 8 is the small phone to beat in 2021
Source: XDA Developers English
Making a smartphone purchasing decision is tough, but for small phone lovers, there aren’t many choices. The ZenFone 8 joins the incredibly small list of compact flagship phones, and it makes a splash by jumping straight up to the top of the list. ASUS doesn’t ask you to compromise on the performance, battery life, display, speakers, or software, and even if the cameras leave a bit to be desired, the competitive price makes up for it.

Source: Phone Arena English
And finally, we come to the iPhone 12 Mini, of course. Is it the Zenfone 8’s only real competitor? I don’t think so. It’s smaller and probably easier to operate (although those hard edges really hurt your hand) but it’s also more expensive and the battery life is underwhelming, to say the least. The iPhone 12 Mini is also an iOS device (duh, obviously) and people don’t change sides all that often.

80% Asus Zenfone 8 review: Pint-sized powerhouse suffers predictable pitfalls
Source: Android Authority English
There’s always a sacrifice to be made with smaller phones. Asus tried really hard to make the Zenfone 8 a top-performing flagship in a small, easy-to-use piece of hardware. It very nearly got everything right, yet just a few things hold the Zenfone 8 back. The most glaring issues to me are battery life and the camera. While the battery life is generally good, flipping on features such as the always-on display takes a noticeable hit on battery life. Furthermore, while the main camera gets the job done, the ultra-wide camera falls behind the competition. The Zenfone 8 also doesn’t support the optical zoom that many of its competitors do. There’s still plenty to like.

Qualcomm Adreno 660: Graphics chip for smartphones and tablets that is integrated within the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. Qualcomm claims that it is 35% faster than the Adreno 650 in the Snapdragon 865 SoC and offers a 20% better power efficiency. For Android it should be one of the fastest graphics cards in 2021.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

This display is quite big for a smartphone but frequently used for smartphones.

Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.
