That’s not to say it’s a bad machine - it really isn’t - but it suffers from the same software deficiencies as those from other manufacturers. In time, these will lift, and we can’t wait to see what they can do.

At RM6,299, the ASUS Vivobook S 15 (S5507) is, in many ways, not too different than a regular x86-based laptop; however, in other ways, it’s a night-and-day difference in terms of user experience. My suggestion? Keep your expectations reasonable – if you think you will use any tools that are more exotic than usual (or just wants a peace of mind that everything will just work), it’s better to stick to x86 laptops from AMD and Intel, for now.

I’ve been waiting a long time for a laptop like the Asus Vivobook S 15 to come along. It’s as good as a M3 MacBook Air, with great performance and battery life. Although it may not be as sleek and attractive as Apple’s ultraportable, it delivers far better value for money, with an unbelievably good display, a comfortable keyboard and good speakers and a webcam as bonuses. With so much more native ARM software now available, it appears Windows laptops are at last able to operate on a level playing field with their Apple silicon counterparts. The only problem may be legacy hardware accessories such as printers, scanners and so on. If that isn’t an issue for you, and you’re not a big PC gamer, then this new generation of Windows laptops would appear to be a no-brainer.

Ultimately, my early impressions of the X Elite are mostly positive. Battery life is a small improvement over x86 chips, though how much depends on what features you choose to run or disable. On the other hand, performance is pretty good and, so far in my testing, comparable to x86 chips with minimal issues. That said, users should expect a few kinks from Windows on ARM since it seems Microsoft hasn’t yet worked everything out. There’s still obviously lots of testing to do, but it looks like the X Elite will finally breathe some life into Windows on ARM and bring much-needed improvements to battery life to Windows laptops. It’s not quite the home run that was advertised, but it’s a definite improvement.

It’s coming later in the year, starting at 1299 GBP on the UK market, so it should be closely priced to the Surface. I’d reckon it could be an interesting option for creators and those of you looking for a lightweight travel companion. I’m not necessarily a fan of the tablet format as a daily driver, but the popularity of the Surface series over the years proves that some of you prefer this design over more traditional laptops or 2-in-1 hybrids. So there’s a market for this device.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
Qualcomm Adreno X1-85 3.8 TFLOPS: An integrated graphics adapter that four Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors feature, as of Sep 2024. It has 1,536 unified shaders at its disposal that are said to run at up to 1,250 MHz. The underlying architecture is reportedly in many respects the same as what was used in the Adreno 730. While thankfully faster than the aging Intel Iris Xe (96 EUs), the Adreno fails to match the Radeon 780M meaning Baldur's Gate 3, a triple-A title released in 2023, is barely playable at 1080p on low with 23 fps on average. Triple-A games of 2024 fare even worse, in no small part due to Qualcomm's subpar graphics drivers.
AMD Radeon 660M: Integrated graphics card in the Ryzen 6000 mobile series APUs based on the RDNA2 architecture with 6 of the 12 CUs (= 384 shaders) and a clock speed of up to 1.9 GHz.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
Intel Arc 8-Core: Integrated graphics adapter based on the Xe LPG architecture (similar to the dedicated Arc GPUs, but with a focus on efficiency). Provides all 8 Xe cores (128 Xe vector engines) and 8 ray tracing units.

Qualcomm Snapdragon X:
SD X Elite X1E-78-100: A pretty fast ARM architecture processor (SoC) for use in Windows laptops. The X1E-78-100 is the least powerful member of the Snapdragon X Elite processor series, as of May 2024; as such, it has 12 Oryon CPU cores running at no more than 3.4 GHz and the 3.8 TFLOPS Adreno X1-85 GPU. The 45 TOPS Hexagon NPU, an impressively fast LPDDR5x-8448 memory controller, USB 4.0 support, TB 4 support and PCIe 4 support are included as well.
AMD Rembrandt (Zen 3+):
R5 7535HS: Mobile Hexa-Core APU using six Zen 3+ cores clocked at 3.3 to 4.55 GHz and a RDNA2 graphics card with 6 CUs clocked at up to 1,900 MHz. Refresh of the old Ryzen 5 6600HS with a 50 MHz higher boost clock speed.
Intel Meteor Lake-H:
Ultra 7 165H: A high-end Meteor Lake family chip that debuted in December 2023. This 1st Gen Core Ultra processor has come to replace 13th generation Core chips; it has 16 cores (6 + 8 + 2) and 22 threads at its disposal. Its Performance cores, of which there are 6, run at up to 5.0 GHz and are HT-enabled while its Efficient cores, of which there are 10 (8 main cores plus 2 extra ones found in the Low Power Island) run at up to 3.8 GHz. The integrated AI Boost NPU offers two Gen 3 engines for hardware AI workload acceleration. vPro Enterprise and business-centric features such as the Remote Platform Erase are onboard as well. This laptop processor's Base power consumption is 28 W while its Turbo power consumption is not supposed to go over 115 W.
