The initial support for Linux has dropped on the Asus Vivobook S 15 OLED laptop, which is powered by Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100. However, not all the functionality is available on the latest kernel patch. For example, USB4, SD card, and battery monitoring aren't currently working.

It seems like the Asus Vivobook S 15 OLED will become one of the first Snapdragon X Elite laptops to see proper Linux support. Patches are now undergoing review, and the basic functionalities are said to be working. But a good number of features are reportedly broken at the moment.

Xilin Wu, the Linux kernel developer working through the DeviceTree support for this Asus laptop, got the Adreno GPU to work on the latest patch, but with additional kernel driver patches that are yet to be upstreamed. Other working but yet-to-be-merged functionalities include CPU frequency scaling, internal eDP display, touchpad and keyboard, and the WCN7850 WiFi.

The developer could also get the NVMe storage to work, but it's currently limited to PCIe Gen 4x2 speeds instead of the expected Gen 4x4. The functionalities that are currently not working on this Snapdragon X Elite laptop include battery monitoring, USB Type-A ports, USB4, HDMI connector, and the SD card slot.

So, Xilin Wu still has a long way to go to make the Asus Vivobook S 15 OLED run well with Linux. Another thing worth noting is that the developer is relying on DeviceTree instead of ARM64 ACPI, which is likely making things more challenging.

Regardless, given that the Vivobook S 15 OLED (available on Amazon) is getting these kernel patches, it stands as a great option for those looking to get a Snapdragon X Elite laptop with proper Linux support in the future.
