Price-to-performance deficit. The Asus VivoBook S14 S406UA delights with a slim, light case, a thin display lid, a backlit keyboard and great battery life. The screen and the case, however, disapoint.

I personally love the Asus VivoBook S14 S406U. It's one of the very few models in its price segment to sport the right ingredients for good performance. Intel's 8th Gen Core i5 along with 8GB of RAM should keep the laptop up to date until Intel's 9th Gen line-up flows in. Though SATA, the solid-state drive inside makes a world of difference to the laptop's overall computing speed. The compromise on storage volume is well worth the speed benefit gained instead. What's more, it's got a comfortable backlit keyboard and a precision touchpad. The audio quality is respectable too.

The answer is yes. The VivoBook S14 is one of the first few Windows laptops to challenge the MacBook Air, the way it does, and also it manages to give Apple's machine a run for its money, while at it, at least for the most part. It looks premium, has the best in-class display, latest hardware, and an aggressive price tag. It's not perfect. It could have done with a bigger battery, but then, fast charging ensures that it is up and running in a jiffy.

The Swift 5 is still recommended if you’re in the pursuit of ultimate portability. Another alternative could be the Apple MacBook Air, which doesn't have as up-to-date specifications and isn't as light, but has a much sturdier body.

The ASUS VivoBook S14 turned out to be an excellent portable notebook. It’s very light weighing only 1.3 kg / 2.9 lbs (depending on the configuration) which is less than most other 14-inch notebooks on the market. Another thing that is important especially for people who type a lot is that the keyboard is very comfortable and easy to get used to though it flexes a bit.

The VivoBook S410U is a successful progression of the series, with decent battery life, compact and stylish body. The machine is ready to handle all day-to-day tasks competently. One of the great security feature is the inclusion of fingerprint scanner.

Asus VivoBook S14 ticks all the boxes for a good laptop, and it hardly leaves any room for complaints. It offers a minimalistic design, good keyboard and superior performance. Although the minimum bezels display was impressive, it has no support for touchscreen. Fingerprint reader performs accurately as well. But poor audio output does stop it from emerging as a true entertainer and as I said, your last hope is to plug in earphones for listening to audio.

Furthermore, you are going to have to pay a lot more for the LG gram 14 with similar specifications. The VivoBook S14 only comes in the configuration that I listed above and is priced at S$1,598. A gram 14 with similar specifications is going to set you back S$2,299 — that's a difference of S$700!

The Asus VivoBook S14 (M433) offers an excellent price to performance ratio, helped in part bythe inclusion of AMD’s efficient AMD Ryzen 4000 series CPU that has enough pixel punching grunt to tackle basic computing and gaming. This is an ideal choice for students and users looking for an affordable notebook for general computing.

Let’s take a step back and look at the big picture. This new ASUS VivoBook S14 M433 is a beautiful laptop with really solid build quality, yet offers a rather powerful AMD chip inside. Both the CPU and GPU performance is great – just that the VRAM is just insufficient. All in all, I really like the new ASUS VivoBook S14 M433.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.
In the notebook sector, Asus had a global market share of about 11% from 2014-2016, making it the fourth largest laptop manufacturer. In the smartphone sector, Asus is not among the Top 5 and has only a small market share (as of 2016).
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
Intel UHD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2, 24 EUs) found on some Kaby-Lake-Refresh CPU models (15 W ULV series). Technically identical to the previous Kaby-Lake GPU called HD Graphics 620.
NVIDIA GeForce MX150: Pascal GP108 based laptop graphics card and mobile version of the desktop GeForce GT 1030. Offers 384 shader cores and usually 2 GB GDDR5 with a 64 Bit memory bus. Manufactured in 14nm.
Intel HD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2) found on some Kaby-Lake CPU models (15 W ULV series).
AMD Vega 7: Integrated graphics adapter of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 7 CUs (= 448 shaders) and a clock speed of up to 1,600 MHz.

Intel Kaby Lake Refresh:
i5-8250U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,100 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process.
i5-8550U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,150 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process.
Intel Kaby Lake:
i3-7100U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.4 GHz (no Turbo Boost), HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process.
i3-7020U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.3 GHz (no Turbo Boost), HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
i7-8565U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4.6 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
AMD Renoir (Ryzen 4000 APU):
R7 4700U: A mobile Octa-Core APU with Zen 2 cores clocked at 2 to 4.1 GHz and a Vega graphics adapter with 7 CUs clocked at up to 1600 MHz. Compared to the faster 4800U, the 4700U offers a slightly lower boost clock speed and does not support SMT.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.2 kg:
This weight is typical for big tablets, small subnotebooks, ultrabooks and convertibles with a 10-11 inch display-diagonal.
1.43 kg:
79.48%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
