The Asus ROG Flow Z13 is an impressively powerful 13-inch gaming laptop with a Surface Pro-style form factor that is now on sale. Courtesy of the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU with the powerful Radeon 8060S iGPU, the gaming laptop can handle almost any CPU or GPU-intensive workload thrown its way.

There was a time when gaming laptops always came equipped with powerful discrete GPUs, but that was before the era of monstrous APUs from AMD and Apple. Now, it is entirely possible to ship a high-end gaming laptop with very decent gaming performance courtesy of massive iGPUs housed inside APUs.

For instance, the Asus ROG Flow Z13, now available with a lucrative $900 discount, packs the impressively capable AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU featuring the RTX 4070-equivalent Radeon 8060S iGPU with a 40-CU setup. Courtesy of Best Buy's aforementioned discount, the gaming laptop can now be bought for just under $2,100.

This specific variant of the ROG gaming laptop comes equipped with 64 GB of on-board DDR5 RAM, a 2.5K 180 Hz IPS display, and a 1 TB SSD. Considering its limited-time nature, interested customers are advised to act while the deal lasts.

The AMD Strix Halo-powered gaming laptop does not disappoint

We had the opportunity to review a variant of the ROG Flow Z13 gaming laptop with half the memory, and found it to be a solid contender for folks who care about not just gaming, but also memory-intensive creative workloads. The 64 GB of non-upgradeable RAM is shared by the CPU and the iGPU, allowing for massive VRAM-intensive projects to load up without much hassle.

The Z13 sports a detachable keyboard, allowing the product to function like a tablet.

As far as raw performance is concerned, we found that the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 ROG Flow Z13 gaming laptop can easily keep up with the beastly 16-core Ryzen 9 7945HX3D in CPU performance, and can outperform a 90W RTX 4070 Laptop GPU in 3DMark by as much as 10%. Not bad at all for a 13-inch machine.

The 13.4-inch 1440p IPS display, while decent, is simply no match for the OLEDs of the world when it comes to response times or contrast levels. However, the panel does manage to cover 95.1% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, and sports excellent color accuracy. Peak brightness is around 518 nits, which should be decent enough outdoors.

As mentioned earlier, the Flow Z13 gaming laptop's RAM is simply impossible to upgrade, at least for the typical consumer. The storage (M.2 2230), thankfully, is not soldered down and can be swapped down the road if necessary.
