Apple's uncharacteristic failure to follow through on plans for a first-gen Car is what it is; however, the company might not have given up on the electric vehicle (EV) space after all. The Cupertino giant is now reportedly mulling a "collaboration" with a "start-up" (albeit possibly a very well-known one from the US) in order to make the best of the time and money sunk into its automotive project.

The Apple Car might be dead, yet not completely gone, according to the “speculation among supply chains” alluded to in a new DigiTimes report. It suggests that the Cupertino giant is still interested in getting into the EV market in other ways, perhaps via a relatively experienced partner in actual automotive production.

Rivian is apparently a front-runner to participate in this alleged "collaboration", which may or may not be a way for Apple to recoup its 10 years and estimated billion dollars spent on its own EV project prior to the Car's cancellation.

The new rumor has given rise to speculation that Apple wants to develop autonomous driving solutions for future Rivian cars.

Then again, it is also possible that the Cupertino giant sees the trendy start-up as the next candidate as a CarPlay+ partner, in a move that could see next-gen Rivian vehicles roll off the line in Illinois with infotainment and other software made by Apple in California.
