Apple and Samsung lose to an unlikely outsider: blind smartphone camera test has surprises in store for us
More than two weeks ago, Marques Brownlee called us to vote but the final result of his blind smartphone camera test 2023 has not been published yet. Another channel has now beaten the old master of the tech YouTube scene to the punch. Versus, which repeatedly publishes controversial comparative tests between camera phones, also called for a blind voting on its social channels this year, with photos of these 12 flagship cameras of 2023 up for selection:
Blind smartphone camera tests are controversial
The test itself works in a similar way to that of MKBHD, only perhaps a little less scientific than Marques' more complex voting procedure from the previous year. As always, the channel's followers were instructed to choose the best one of two or three photos showing the same scene, although they did not know which cameras took them. This is intended to avoid bias, but such tests are of course controversial. For example, portraits of people predominate - also in this test. So if you primarily take photos of landscapes or cities, these results will be less useful to you. We don't want to spoil the fun - if you want to skip to the results, you can find them right after the video.
The unlikely winner and the prominent losers
We already know from previous blind tests that Apple tends to lose early in the voting process. In this one, the iPhone 15 Pro Max from Apple was also eliminated in the first round and lost to the Oppo Find X6 Pro. In contrast, Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra made it through to round 2 and won against the Honor Magic 5 Pro. Perhaps surprisingly, the Asus ROG Phone was able to prevail against the highly acclaimed Huawei camera, while in the Vivo vs Google duo, the Pixel 8 Pro won against the X90 Pro with Zeiss camera. Despite the Leica branding, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra also loses to the Sony Xperia 1 V in the first round. In the OnePlus vs Redmagic match, the red gaming devils win.
In the second round, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra also prevails against the Oppo Find X6 Pro, the Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate against the Google Pixel 8 Pro and the Sony Xperia 1 Mark V against the Nubia RedMagic 8s Pro. The surprising winner of this blind smartphone camera test in the third round is the Asus gaming phone (ROG Phone 7 available here on Amazon), whose photo received the most votes in the end. If you are interested in the reasons for the surprising winners, you should watch the video above, as the voters' decisions are usually quite plausible.
