Apple AirPods Pro 2 to join the iPhone 14 series at this week's launch event
Mark Gurman has released his latest Power On newsletter, in which he discusses all things iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Pro. Both due for release on September 7 at Apple's 'Far Out' launch event, Gurman believes that a next-generation pair of AirPods Pro earbuds could be joining them. While the AirPods Pro 2 have been rumoured for a while at this point, it makes sense for Apple to replace the AirPods Pro, which is fast approaching its third birthday.
Although Gurman has not expanded on what to expect from the AirPods Pro 2, Andrew O'Hara claims to have obtained leaked CAD files showing the earbuds' charging case. Although O'Hara has not verified the authenticity of the images, the design shown matches earlier rumours. Specifically, it seems Apple has decided to bundle a charging case that visually looks identical to the one for the original AirPods Pro.
However, the CAD renders show a few speaker grilles for 'Find My' support, along with a lanyard anchor and what could be a microphone. Unfortunately, it remains unclear why the charging case would need a microphone. Additionally, the CAD renders do not reveal whether the AirPods Pro 2 supports Lightning or USB Type-C charging. On current thinking, the AirPods Pro 2 will support the former, not the latter, as well as Bluetooth LE Audio for improved battery life. Pricing has not leaked yet, although we would not be surprised if the AirPods Pro 2 directly replaced the AirPods Pro at US$249.
