Call to Arms is an unusual hybrid that first lets players command units in tried-and-tested RTS fashion, then pick up a rifle themselves. The title is currently available again on Steam at its all-time low price of under $4.

Anyone who often sits down at their PC and cannot decide whether to fire up a strategy game or a first-person shooter next is in exactly the right place with Call to Arms. This military hybrid offers both – and is currently 75% off on Steam, bringing the price down to $3.74 instead of $14.99. According to SteamDB, this matches its previous all-time low price.

Call to Arms combines two completely different types of gameplay: first, players move their squads across the map from a bird’s-eye view, as in a classic real-time strategy game; moments later, they take direct control of a soldier, tank or helicopter and join the fight themselves from a first-person or third-person perspective. Call to Arms does not come with a sprawling story. Instead, the game focuses on tactical missions in which players have to hold or capture positions, for example. That could also make it a good choice for a quick session on the go. Compatibility with the Steam Deck is listed as “Playable.” In addition to campaigns, Skirmish and Conquest in single-player, Call to Arms also offers multiplayer and co-op modes.

Call to Arms holds a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam, with 79% of roughly 24,000 reviewers recommending the game. The mix of real-time strategy and shooter is generally well received. The modern military setting and mod support are also frequently praised. However, many players are less enthusiastic about the business model, which relies not only on the base game but also on DLC, season passes and other paywalled content. The base game’s price of just under $4 is therefore not enough to experience Call to Arms in full. Anyone who would still like to take a look currently has a good opportunity to do so on Steam. Various add-ons are also discounted at the moment.
