No. 2 on Steam: Viral free-to-play game lets players earn Steam Wallet credit

Idle RPGs are like side quests in Skyrim – there are so many that you eventually stop counting. One of the latest entries in the genre is TBH: Task Bar Hero, which was released on May 27, 2026. But there seems to be something special about this game. According to SteamDB, it climbed to No. 2 among the most-played games on Steam within about three weeks, reaching a peak of more than 500,000 concurrent players and landing just behind Counter-Strike 2. Despite this, only 50% of its Steam reviews are positive.
TBH runs in a small window at the bottom of the screen while players work, browse the web or do other things on their PC. In the background, little heroes automatically fight enemies and collect experience, money and gear. Players mainly influence the game through class selection, equipment and upgrades. The title is free, runs almost by itself and still delivers the familiar loot loop of rising numbers, better items and increasingly powerful characters – practically a mini-Diablo for the taskbar. Its easy accessibility and rewarding background gameplay are likely one reason for the current hype surrounding TBH. Another reason, and at the same time the main source of criticism in the reviews, is that players can apparently earn Steam Wallet credit in this idle RPG.

In TBH, players can earn items that can later be sold on the Steam Marketplace. Most of the time, the amounts involved are only a few cents. But with a game that runs almost by itself in the background, the suspicion is obvious: some users are likely playing less for the gameplay and more for farming. The developers have already responded by restricting sales and adjusting drop rates. It remains to be seen whether Task Bar Hero can maintain its player numbers even with reduced “earning opportunities.”
