Alienware 13
Alienware is highly regarded as being among the best producers of gaming devices in this day and age. Their latest portable gaming notebook series, the Alienware 13, got its name because of its 13 inch display. With this device, portability is the buzzword as it has been designed to be as slim as possible, measuring about 2.54 cm in thickness and weighing slightly over 2 kg. The 13 inch display comes in two variants, the normal 1366 x 768 resolution screen without touch support and a touch sensitive 2560 x 1440 model.
The hardware includes an Intel i5-4210U 1.7 GHz dual core processor and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPU to adequately meet the demands of most games out there. Neatly packed into the body are Alienware's own Klipsch speakers, which provides enough bass to complete that awesome gaming experience.
The body of this device is done in a futuristic design with sharply angled edges below the display and above the keyboard, as well as deep slanted grooves on the cover, fitted with two LED lights leading to a backlit alien head logo. Also available is a graphic amplifier developed by Nvidia in conjunction with Alienware, which can override the 860M GPU and provides the more powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 GPU, which can boost gaming to unimaginable speeds and heights.

Small chassis, big performance? After products with 11 and 14-inches, the gaming experts from Alienware now offer a 13-inch product. Our article tries to focus on the question of whether a dual-core is sufficient for the GeForce GTX 860M and the external amplifier.

The Alienware 13 is a beautifully designed and rugged feeling gaming laptop that you can take with you anywhere. As is often the case with Alienware, the price is just a little too steep considering the specifications. However, at this size we would be tempted to pick the 13 over any similarly sized rivals simply because it feels so well made. You also get Dell's excellent collect and return warranty that includes in-home support should the firm decide it's required. If you don't have as much money to spend, though, the Chillblast Defiant 2 Mini remains our favourite compact gaming laptop.

Given the quality of the Alienware 13 laptop (15 and 17-inch models have also just been announced), being the only device that can use the Graphics Amplifier is a minor niggle and it can be expected that other Alienware laptops will support the connection. At less than $2000 for the whole kit (laptop, high-end graphics card and graphics amplifier), a rig that can be both a gaming laptop and an upgradable gaming desktop is a great price and well worth the investment.

The Alienware 13 is good performer but it loses out to couple of sub-100k laptops, like the Lenovo Y50 and ASUS X550JK. The laptop will perform better with an external GPU, which can be used via the Alienware Graphics Amplifier, which again requires you to shell out more money.

Alienware and Dell have created their best portable laptop to date, which manages to squeeze in plenty of power into a relatively small frame. It's chunkier than many other laptops on the market, but it's practically future proof too for all your gaming needs if you invest in the Graphics Amplifier. If you're looking for a one-stop PC to take on the go and then crank the settings up in your favourite games when you get home, it's well worth checking out.

If you're in the market for a gaming laptop then it tends to be a shout between Alienware and Razer. With UK availability and a starting price of £949 with the Intel Core i5 chipset, the Alienware 13 certainly makes its mark. Just make sure you budget for the additional Graphics Amplifier and associated card as it'll add up quickly - but you can configure your ideal system right now and, if the price is right, it'll be whizzing its way to you before the Christmas period.

While other slim gaming notebooks are aimed at giving players a little bit of power and portability, Alienware promises the best of both worlds. By itself, the $1,699 Alienware 13 delivers solid gaming performance with long battery life and a captivating ultra-high-resolution display. Admittedly, I would have preferred the more powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 870M card, but the 13's G860M GPU gets the job done.

By itself, the Alienware 13 is a fine laptop. It's equipped with capable guts for a reasonable price (at least to start) that should keep players plenty entertained. That is, so long as they don't mind knocking the graphical fidelity of games down to low in most cases.

Alienware 13 R2
The Alienware gaming series laptop by DELL is the smaller version of the Alienware 17. The 13 in the name suggests a screen size of 13 inch. While it is the more "affordable" option for serious gamers, it is still designed the same as the other Alienware laptops with the customizable backlight. The computer has a very slick gray color with the alien head in the center of the lid. In addition, the computer features a keyboard with blue backlight. The laptop comes with three USB ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and an HDMI output. The laptop is also very light at 2.09 kg (4.6 pounds). Moreover,, it is the slimmest Alienware laptop available in the market. One of the best features is that the laptop has a very responsive touchscreen. 4 GB of RAM makes it a nice computer for multitasking and 500 GB of hard drive space are available. The computer also features an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M with 2 GB of VRAM, which makes the most demanding video settings a piece of cake on the Full HD display. Another good thing about the laptop is that it is very durable and its battery lasts up to 10.5 hours while idle. However, the battery life is only 3.5 hours while gaming with high settings. The computer also sports an Intel i5 processor. While isn't the best, the computer is a smaller version so it doesn't necessarily need an i7 processor. The Windows 10 system comes with two Klipsch speakers, which are very powerful for movies and music.Specifications

Topping my wish list for a future incarnation of this product is access to higher-end GPUs (or an OLED screen in a larger laptop that can more easily fit a GeForce 980M card). But for an eye-catching new technology that's hard to find -- Samsung, HP and Lenovo each offer a single OLED PC product, and none for gaming -- the price for this Alienware 13 is surprisingly modest.

Finally, in more general purpose use, the Alienware 13 OLED feels great, looks great and offers responsive performance for power users and the mainstream alike. For content creation or other work-related high image fidelity requirements, the color reproduction, contrast and pop of this machine's OLED panel is second to none currently.

If you've been using a regular display for your laptop gaming and entertainment, I'm here to tell you that you're doing it wrong. The $1,299 Alienware 13's OLED screen is a vibrant revelation of where gaming notebooks are going. There's a lot to like about the Alienware 13. Its design is distinct and super-compact, its lighting is insanely customizable and its speakers are loud enough to fill your room. However, with a low-res 1366 x 768 display and gaming performance that's "meh" at best, you shouldn't settle for the lowest-end version of Alienware's slick laptop.

You’d probably expect top-notch performance in a tiny 13-inch form factor with the label Alienware on it and you are probably right to do so but in reality, the Alienware 13 is everything but a gaming powerhouse. Yes, we are once again met with impeccable build quality with excellent choice of materials – typically for an Alienware product – slightly bulky and a bit hefty for a 13-incher but nothing too alarming, especially for a gaming machine that is. We are still pretty impressed by the horsepower, storage options, and battery that the engineers were able to stick inside the small chassis. For example, you can get a hold of two M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD slots along with a 51Wh battery that will last for nearly a day with normal usage. That’s more than some other premium notebooks and ultrabooks can offer. And to be honest, that was the last thing we were expecting from a gaming-oriented notebook. Oh, and the touchpad and keyboard are pretty comfortable as well.

The bottom line? If you fit the profile -- you mostly play games at home but want a powerful laptop when traveling -- the combination of an Alienware 13 R2 and Alienware Graphics Amplifier may be the solution you've been waiting for. If you're not interested in the AMP, take pause to consider if you can be content with a GeForce GTX 960M, as it's the only option available at this time.

When it comes to sheer power, the Alienware 13 proves that size doesn't matter. As one of the smallest VR-ready systems available, the lightweight system makes a portable Oculus Rift and HTC Vive a reality. If that's not enough, the Alienware 13 is a stone-cold fox, with its slimmed-down dimensions and a supervivid OLED display that's sure to attract a fair number of onlookers. You also get a cushy keyboard that is perfect for typing reports or dishing out digital doom, an impressive audio system and respectable transfer speeds.

We tossed a few runs of Gears Of War 4 over resolution just for kicks and the Alienware 13 kicked it up a notch there too, with 60 fps performance at High image quality settings at a 1080p resolution. Incidentally, the machine also scored a 7.1 on the SteamVR performance test, showing it was also "VR Ready." Stay tuned in the days ahead as we step through the rest of the design, software and benchmark details of the Alienware 13 R3. For now, we're going back to work, gaming. It's a little tough, at the moment, to judge the Alienware 13's value compared to its competition, because when we wrote this, there were no other 13-inch, GTX 1060-based gaming laptops available (at least that we could find on Newegg.com). There was a 14-inch Aorus X3 Plus v6-PC3K4D with GTX 1060 graphics ready for pre-order when we wrote this. It purports to sport a higher-resolution (3,800x1,800-pixel) screen, and it is priced at $100 less. But that high-resolution screen is a poor fit for the abilities of the GTX 1060 graphics. We'd gladly pay $100 more for the privilege of gaming (and working) on the gorgeous OLED screen of the Alienware 13.

If you're not put off by its screen size, Alienware 13 packs a lot into its small frame: VR capability, a beautiful QHD touch-screen display, ample ports, good battery life, smooth gameplay, and high build quality. It's heavier and less sleek than the Razer Blade, but the Alienware's superior Pascal-based graphics, portability, and competitive price earn it our Editors' Choice award for ultraportable gaming laptops.

The Alienware 13 is one sweet little machine. For its size, it’s a bit heavy, but in exchange you get an extremely well-rounded laptop that excels in every way possible.

The Alienware 13 isn’t the prettiest gaming laptop around, but it is one of the most flexible and ticks all the right boxes when it comes to functionality. The wealth of customisation options means gamers can tweak it to meet their specific needs and desired price point. Its excellent keyboard and robust metal chassis certainly add appeal over rivals, such as the Razer Blade and Gigabyte Aero 14, for buyers where mobility doesn't matter so much.

Whether or not the Alienware 13 is for you depends on whether portability is important. If it is, you should probably look elsewhere for lighter laptops from Razer, MSI and Aorus. If you don’t really care, the Alienware 13 offers decent hardware and features at an affordable price point.

Alienware 13 OLED 2017
The Alienware 13 OLED 2017 is a high-performance gaming laptop. As usual for Alienware, it features a futuristic design, colorful LED lights and top-tier gaming performance. The Alienware 13 proves that gaming laptops can be thin, have enough battery life to survive a plane flight and double as a productivity and entertainment machines with few compromises. The gaming laptop features a simple, matte black finish, which blends in as a normal work laptop. However, the anodized aluminium lid, subtly angled front lip and Dell's AlienFX lighting lend it just the right amount of attitude as a gaming laptop. The interior is all matte rubber with soft, customisable lighting behind the keys and logo beneath the screen. The material does not collect fingerprints like laptops built from other materials. The new Alienware 13 is not only a strong example of a compact gaming notebook (probably competing with Razer’s Blade series) but also the brand's first outing with an 7th generation Intel Kaby Lake Core CPU, which promises to push 4K content to the laptop's screen. The OLED display features a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The color reproduction is great and game graphics look crisp and vivid. It’s also a touchscreen which makes use of several Windows 10 features. Inside the laptop is an Intel Core i7-7700 2.8GHz processor and 16 GB of RAM. Its dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 is sufficient for gaming in Full-HD. Thanks to Steam and Nvidia’s own GeForce games store, it’s as easy to get top titles on PC as it is on the PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The Alienware 13 2017 is powerful enough to support full VR gaming if the user has an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive to hand. It is the first 13-inch laptop capable of doing this. The audio driver of Alienware 13 can offer loud, clear sound without distortion or cracking. To enhance the gaming experience, the Alienware 13 has Alienware's Virtual Surround, which is an attempt to simulate spatial sound in a laptop. It features clear differentiation from simple left-and-right sound separation, with the ability to project sound to areas close to the laptop's chassis or all the way across the room. For battery life, the Alienware 13 has a battery life of 5 hours, which is lesser than most premium laptops around the market. However, battery life performance is somehow forgivable especially for laptops aimed to be used mainly for gaming. As for portability, the Alienware 13 features an Ethernet jack, a mini DisplayPort, an HDMI port and a USB Type-C Thunderbolt port. This is also where a user will plug in the AC adapter and the Alienware Graphics Amplifier. The Alienware 13 OLED proves to be a worthy competition to the Razer Blade in many ways. In fact, it certainly tops the Razer Blade in terms of raw gaming power. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

Given the low-ceiling on how high you can push the fidelity of games running on the new Alienware 13, it’s hard to know who to really recommend this product to. Sure, the combination of brand power, high-end specs, slick glowy-metal-sci-fi-death-machine form-factor and the next-gen OLED display make the new A13 a downright appealing package. However, based on the performance we encountered, it seems difficult to justify spending this much on a gaming laptop that can’t deliver anything less than the best - and the Alienware 13 - OLED or otherwise - doesn’t quite live up to that standard.

When friends come to me asking for a laptop recommendation, I usually try to lead them through a process of figuring out what features they need, what size they want and what fits in their budget before offering them a short list of different options from different manufacturers. When they don't feel like doing the work, however, I usually shrug and tell them to look at Alienware. There's a reason for that. Dell's gaming brand has a history of making well-built gaming machines with great design and excellent performance that are a joy to use. The Alienware 13 is no exception. If you're overwhelmed by the dizzying array of choices available to you as a PC gamer but still want to be sure you're getting a high-quality machine, Alienware's latest won't let you down.

Drawbacks and all, this is still the best gaming laptop I’ve seen thus far - hitting the sweet spot between performance and portability. If you want the monster truck of gaming laptops in your bag each day, then this is the one to go for.

Alienware: Alienware was founded in the USA in 1996. The European headquarters is located in Ireland. Alienware has been part of the Dell Group since 2006. The product range mainly focuses on gaming laptops and desktops, which are developed and manufactured by Dell. The trademark is a slightly futuristic design with an Alien as the logo. Additionally, workstations for private and business customers are sold.
As with every brand, there are also some points of criticism with Alienware. Some customers have complained about the high prices of the products, while others have criticized the quality of customer services. There have also been some reports of problems with the reliability and durability of some Alienware products. However, many customers have also had positive experiences with the brand and appreciate the powerful gaming computers.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M: Upper mid-range graphics card from the GeForce GTX 800M series.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M: Upper mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GTX 900M series.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M: Lower high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell chip GM204 and GM206 (newer 2016 version with higher clock rates). Part of the GeForce GTX 900M series.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.

Intel Core i5:
4210U: Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.7 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 2.7 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
5500U: Broadwell-based ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 5500 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
6500U: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 520 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Kaby Lake:
i7-7700HQ: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture. Besides four CPU cores (including Hyper Threading), the chips also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU and is manufactured in an improved 14 nm process.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.96 kg:
2.6 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
78.21%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
