Given the low-ceiling on how high you can push the fidelity of games running on the new Alienware 13, it’s hard to know who to really recommend this product to. Sure, the combination of brand power, high-end specs, slick glowy-metal-sci-fi-death-machine form-factor and the next-gen OLED display make the new A13 a downright appealing package. However, based on the performance we encountered, it seems difficult to justify spending this much on a gaming laptop that can’t deliver anything less than the best - and the Alienware 13 - OLED or otherwise - doesn’t quite live up to that standard.

When friends come to me asking for a laptop recommendation, I usually try to lead them through a process of figuring out what features they need, what size they want and what fits in their budget before offering them a short list of different options from different manufacturers. When they don't feel like doing the work, however, I usually shrug and tell them to look at Alienware. There's a reason for that. Dell's gaming brand has a history of making well-built gaming machines with great design and excellent performance that are a joy to use. The Alienware 13 is no exception. If you're overwhelmed by the dizzying array of choices available to you as a PC gamer but still want to be sure you're getting a high-quality machine, Alienware's latest won't let you down.

Drawbacks and all, this is still the best gaming laptop I’ve seen thus far - hitting the sweet spot between performance and portability. If you want the monster truck of gaming laptops in your bag each day, then this is the one to go for.

Model: The Alienware 13 OLED 2017 is a high-performance gaming laptop. As usual for Alienware, it features a futuristic design, colorful LED lights and top-tier gaming performance. The Alienware 13 proves that gaming laptops can be thin, have enough battery life to survive a plane flight and double as a productivity and entertainment machines with few compromises. The gaming laptop features a simple, matte black finish, which blends in as a normal work laptop. However, the anodized aluminium lid, subtly angled front lip and Dell's AlienFX lighting lend it just the right amount of attitude as a gaming laptop. The interior is all matte rubber with soft, customisable lighting behind the keys and logo beneath the screen. The material does not collect fingerprints like laptops built from other materials. The new Alienware 13 is not only a strong example of a compact gaming notebook (probably competing with Razer’s Blade series) but also the brand's first outing with an 7th generation Intel Kaby Lake Core CPU, which promises to push 4K content to the laptop's screen. The OLED display features a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The color reproduction is great and game graphics look crisp and vivid. It’s also a touchscreen which makes use of several Windows 10 features.
Inside the laptop is an Intel Core i7-7700 2.8GHz processor and 16 GB of RAM. Its dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 is sufficient for gaming in Full-HD. Thanks to Steam and Nvidia’s own GeForce games store, it’s as easy to get top titles on PC as it is on the PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The Alienware 13 2017 is powerful enough to support full VR gaming if the user has an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive to hand. It is the first 13-inch laptop capable of doing this. The audio driver of Alienware 13 can offer loud, clear sound without distortion or cracking. To enhance the gaming experience, the Alienware 13 has Alienware's Virtual Surround, which is an attempt to simulate spatial sound in a laptop. It features clear differentiation from simple left-and-right sound separation, with the ability to project sound to areas close to the laptop's chassis or all the way across the room. For battery life, the Alienware 13 has a battery life of 5 hours, which is lesser than most premium laptops around the market. However, battery life performance is somehow forgivable especially for laptops aimed to be used mainly for gaming. As for portability, the Alienware 13 features an Ethernet jack, a mini DisplayPort, an HDMI port and a USB Type-C Thunderbolt port. This is also where a user will plug in the AC adapter and the Alienware Graphics Amplifier. The Alienware 13 OLED proves to be a worthy competition to the Razer Blade in many ways. In fact, it certainly tops the Razer Blade in terms of raw gaming power.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

i7-7700HQ: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture. Besides four CPU cores (including Hyper Threading), the chips also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU and is manufactured in an improved 14 nm process.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.2.6 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
Alienware: Alienware was founded in the USA in 1996. The European headquarters is located in Ireland. Alienware has been part of the Dell Group since 2006. The product range mainly focuses on gaming laptops and desktops, which are developed and manufactured by Dell. The trademark is a slightly futuristic design with an Alien as the logo. Additionally, workstations for private and business customers are sold.
As with every brand, there are also some points of criticism with Alienware. Some customers have complained about the high prices of the products, while others have criticized the quality of customer services. There have also been some reports of problems with the reliability and durability of some Alienware products. However, many customers have also had positive experiences with the brand and appreciate the powerful gaming computers.
72%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
