One of Canon’s most affordable full-frame interchangeable-lens cameras is set to get a successor as early as September. While the Canon EOS R8 Mark II is expected to feature an exciting retro design, the latest rumors suggest the sensor may be a disappointment.

Rumors have been circulating for months that the successor to the Canon EOS R8 ($1,499 on Amazon) will hit the market as early as September. But while rumors have previously suggested that the more affordable full-frame mirrorless camera would inherit the 32.5-megapixel CMOS sensor from the Canon EOS R6 Mark III, CanonRumors has now learned that the camera, like its predecessor, is equipped with a 24-megapixel sensor.

It is not yet known whether this is the same sensor as in the first-generation EOS R8 or a new 24 MP sensor that could potentially offer a wider dynamic range and less image noise at high ISO settings. CanonRumors’ sources reiterate that the EOS R8 Mark II features a "retro design." However, it is not yet known whether Canon will go so far as to adopt the design of the coveted Canon AE-1, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, or whether the retro look will be subtly incorporated through a few design accents.

Technically speaking, at least two major upgrades are reportedly planned compared to the older EOS R8. First, the full-frame sensor in the Canon EOS R8 Mark II is said to be image-stabilized (IBIS), so that photos taken handheld should not appear blurry even with relatively long exposure times. And second, Canon is said to be including a second SD card slot, allowing photos to be saved to two memory cards so they aren’t lost even if one card fails.
