A compact gaming laptop with OLED and RTX 5070 - what sounds good at first turns out to be a worse overall package compared to the rivals from Asus and Razer, which are also more affordable.

Acer's Predator Triton 14 AI is a compact 14-inch laptop with a mobile GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, which is designed for multimedia users, gamers as well as content creators. The graphics card can consume up to 110 Watts and is therefore one of the fastest models, but the GPU is slightly held back by the processor. It is an Intel Lunar Lake CPU (which also explains the AI in the designation for Copilot+) with 8 cores and a maximum power consumption of 37 Watts, which is designed for efficiency. The single-core performance is good, so there are no limitations in everyday situations, but the multi-core performance is noticeable weaker compared to the immediate rivals, which is also affecting the gaming. If you use the Turbo mode (that you need for the maximum performance), the compact laptop also gets annoyingly loud at 58 dB(A).

The Lunar Lake processor does not result in longer battery times, either, but the low power consumption at least allows a very quiet operation during everyday tasks (without dGPU utilization). Looking at the overall concept, however, we think an AMD Ryzen chip or an Arrow Lake processor would have been a better choice.

The display is another problem, because the touchscreen layer results in a very visible grid effect, which is immediately noticeable especially on bright contents and it severely affects the subjective image quality. This means that typical OLED strengths like pure black and vivid colors cannot really be enjoyed. There is also PWM flickering and the color profiles for sRGB as well as P3 are not perfectly optimized, either.

The excellent chassis with good input devices (incl. haptic touchpad with stylus support) are advantages, but that does not really help too much considering the issues. This also brings us to the price, because it is very expensive at $2599, which is hard to justify. This impression is supported when you look at the prices of the two main rivals Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 as well as Razer Blade 14. Both are better overall packages and they are even a couple of hundred bucks cheaper right now in comparable configurations (G14: ~$2099, Blade 14: ~$2299). They do not offer a touchscreen, but there are no limitations in terms of image quality and the G14 is also available with faster GPUs (up to RTX 5080 Laptop) if you need more graphics performance.
