Great performance, comfortable keyboard, beautiful display, but how well does this Predator make its growl heard? Extremely well, in fact, as the sound on offer is fantastic, with strong and solid bass emerging from the notebook’s frame, thanks in no small part to the integrated 4.2 sound, consisting of two subwoofers. Watching Overwatch’s frenetic combat, and terrific animated short, was a pleasure, and whether watching movies or playing games, you can feel slight, but not overly distracting, vibrations through the keyboard.

There’s something so uniquely PC about that damn ejectable fan though. It’s nothing but a gimmick, but it’s a gimmick that captures the imagination—the modern-day equivalent of the old TURBO buttons you used to see on PCs. It feels good to pop out the superfluous optical drive and wing it into the corner of the room like a Frisbee, then slam an extra bit of cooling into the case. Who even cares that it barely does anything?

The Predator 17 has oodles of processing power, with more than enough to handle any triple-A release, but it’s resoundingly beaten by the likes of the Metabox Prime. However, it’s also a slightly better-built machine with a nicer display, which doesn’t sound like Bronwyn Bishop is landing in your back yard.

If it was quieter and shed a few pounds, the Predator 17 would be a close-to-perfect gaming machine. As it stands, it will have to settle for merely being a great one, combining solid performance with (mostly) wise design and a dependable battery. Just don't take it backpacking.

It costs close to AED 9550, which I would say is quite expensive for a gaming laptop. However, if you are looking for a replacement for you desktop, this is a good option. Sure, there are cheaper alternatives, but the Predator’s impressive GPU and other configurations makes its prey on games today (no pun intended) and hopefully those yet to come.

The Predator is one of the most outlandish gaming notebooks I’ve seen, which could certainly prove divisive – but it’s crammed with solid features too. Build quality is good, it’s got impressive connectivity and accessibility, and the keyboard and trackpad are comprehensive and comfortable.

Whatever way you look at this device, just so long as you're gaming, Acer has knocked it out of the park. If you wanted a smaller laptop, buy a smaller laptop - this one is made for people who want to hit that sweet spot between being mobile and having a full PC gaming experience at the same time.

The Predator 17 costs an arm and a leg, and I wish there were a higher-res screen option, but overall it's quite a remarkable gaming laptop. Compared to other models in the same price range, the Predator 17 offers similar performance but longer battery life, and a much bulkier design.

We wouldn't dwell on the benchmarks the Predator 17 failed to win. It was thoroughly competitive in every test, with performance that places it firmly in the overachiever class of top-end gaming laptops—as, indeed, it ought to be considering its $2,599 price. We have a suspicion that, if Acer had sent the $2,099 configuration with slightly less RAM and SSD storage, we'd be raving about an Editors' Choice winner instead of a mere four-star rave review recipient.

The new Predator 17 was the most promising new laptop to debut at IFA 2015, and it lives up to that promise. While it’s not the most exciting notebook at first glance, its conventional design, combined with excellent hardware, makes for an incredible all-around system. It robs the Asus G751 of its championship title and, like that rig, has appeal that extends beyond gaming.

The Predator G9-791 is Acer's first attempt at building a proper 17-inch gaming laptop, and although some minor aspects could have been done better, the laptop ticks all the important boxes and earns our recommendation. Hopefully Acer will price it competitively as well, cause otherwise it is a worthy option in its class.

Acer has been long been associated with lower-end and mid-range devices, but in the last couple of years it proved that the high-end segment isn’t something new to the company and their latest top-shelf laptop, Predator G9-791, is the living proof. It has it all – stylish design, aggressive looks suitable for gamers, sturdy and rigid construction and beastly hardware. Speaking of which, it’s on par with some of the offerings from ASUS (ROG G751 in particular) Dell (Alienware). We are yet to see the asking price of the notebook, but we will make a wild guess that it will be priced little above ASUS ROG G751 and lower than the Alienware counterpart. Mainly because the storage upgrades on the Predator are somehow more expensive or premium, as we may say. While the G751 offers one M.2 SSD slot paired with two 2.5-inch SSD/HDD slots, the Predator has only one 2.5-inch slot and two M.2 SSD slots – one supports 2280 and the other supports 22110 standard.

Model: The Acer Predator 17 G9-791-72VU is a gaming beast that looks the part. Acer has certainly grown the Predator brand and the killer hardware certainly helps with that. Design is kept similar with the previous generation and the black chassis with red highlight takes center stage. Build quality is impressive and the rear exhaust system definitely aids in keeping the system cool. There is a full-size backlit keyboard with food tactile feedback and a comfortably sized precision touchpad. The Windows 10 device comes equipped with a 15.6 inch Active Matrix TFT Colour LCD with Full HD resolution. Audio quality is decent as the stereo setup is tuned by Dolby Audio Enhancement.
The Acer Predator 17 G9-791-72VU sports an Intel Core i7-6700HQ quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz, 16 GB of DDR4 SDRAM, and a powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX980M GPU with 4 GB of VRAM. Storage on board comes in the form of a 1 TB HDD and 256 GB SSD combination. Other features found on the Acer Predator 17 G9-791-72VU are Bluetooth 4.1, a Blu-ray writer, a card reader, a Killer Wireless LAN card, an HDMI out, four USB 3.0 ports, and a Display Port. Battery life on the laptop is provided by a 8-cell Lithium Ion cell rated at 6000 mAh.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M:
Fast high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
4 kg:
Only a few laptops are in this weight class because the mobility is rather limited due to the high weight.
Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
82.33%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
