Reviews for the AVADirect Clevo P157SM-A

The P157SM is not an inspired laptop. Though plenty quick, in most other respects, it ranges from respectable to lackluster. Display quality, audio quality and portability are sore points that detract from the overall experience. Like Origin’s EON17-S, which also suffered from display problems, AVADirect’s Clevo P157SM doesn’t help games look their best.

The Clevo P157SM is without doubt the fastest 15.6-inch notebook available today though not without compromise. The positives first: we enjoyed the colorful 1080p display, stellar performance especially for gaming, a vast assortment of customizable options, backlit keyboard and impressive array of ports (when’s the last time you saw a notebook with both full and mini DisplayPorts?). We’re able to recommend the Clevo P157SM to anyone prioritizing performance and expandability over everything else. AVA Direct offers this notebook in an almost unlimited number of configurations – you can even choose the brand of RAM you want. For everyone else, you can get a more refined notebook for the same or less money from a mainstream notebook maker.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M: High-end graphics card from the GeForce GTX 800M series.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
4810MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.8 GHz with Turbo Boost support. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
15.60":
15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.3.3 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
AVADirect: AVADirect Custom Computers is a custom computer manufacturing company located in Ohio, USA. 73%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
