If burning RTX 5090s weren't enough, CPUs are now spontaneously combusting in their sockets. An unfortunate Reddit user ended up with their shiny new Ryzen 7 9800X3D burned to a crisp. It was mounted on an Asrock Nova 870E motherboard running at stock speeds with overclocked RAM. The puzzling part is, the user wasn't even stressing the processor much.
Apparently, they were watching something on the internet before the CPU went belly up. For now, we have to take the user's word for it. We've seen this same story play out before with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, resulting in massive backlash for Asus, who was at fault with their wonky BIOS updates. But it's an Asrock board and this is the first recorded instance of an exploding Ryzen 7 9800X3D, at least on Reddit.
It is too early to determine if this was a result of improper mounting. The user has already handed over the 9800X3D to their local store, so it is impossible to ascertain the clause now. Nevertheless, Gamers Nexus reached out to the OP and offered to buy the motherboard for additional scrutiny. Last time, they successfully managed to recreate an exploding 7800X3D under lab settings, and one can only hope that doesn't happen again.
