A new DualSense Edge is reportedly on the horizon for 2027 but it might not be the upgrade you are hoping for

Sony's premium controller is finally getting an update. Don't expect Hall effect sticks, though - just an easier way to swap the battery.

An updated model of Sony's DualSense Edge controller has surfaced in FCC filings, according to a report picked up by ResetEra, suggesting the first revision to the premium PS5 pad since its original 2023 launch.

Sony's DualSense Edge launched in January 2023 as the company's answer to Microsoft's Xbox Elite controllers, packing swappable stick modules, remappable buttons, and adjustable trigger travel into a $200 pro-tier pad for PS5 and PC. It's the only DualSense variant Sony has sold at that price point, and it hasn't seen a hardware refresh since release.

The listing carries the model number CFI-ZCP2, one step up from the CFI-ZCP1 stamped on every DualSense Edge sold since January 2023. Beyond the model number itself, Sony hasn't confirmed anything, and the filing doesn't reveal what's actually changing inside the controller.

A compliance-related modification versus an actual upgrade?

The leading theory has less to do with new features and more to do with compliance. The European Union's Battery Regulation, which takes effect on February 18, 2027, requires portable batteries in consumer electronics to be readily removable and replaceable by the end user without specialized tools, rather than requiring the device to be mailed back to the manufacturer for a battery swap. If that's what's driving the update, CFI-ZCP2 would likely keep the DualSense Edge's design largely intact while making its internal lithium-ion battery easier to access and replace.

Gaming hardware has recently seen similar redesigns. Nintendo has already reworked the Switch 2 and several of its accessories to meet the same EU rule, and has reportedly had to pull older, non-compliant hardware from European storefronts ahead of the deadline. A similar battery-access tweak would let Sony keep selling the DualSense Edge in the EU without a more drastic overhaul.

Several of the document names attached to the CFI-ZCP2 listing, reportedly including updated design files and a user manual, are locked from public view until the end of January 2027, just weeks before the EU deadline kicks in. That timing lines up with when Sony would need the controller ready to ship in Europe, and suggests an announcement could land in that same window.

None of this actually confirms a meaningfully different DualSense Edge experience for players outside the EU. Sony hasn't announced pricing, availability, or whether the change will roll out globally or stay confined to markets where the battery rule applies. For now, anyone hoping for a redesigned Edge with new sticks, better battery life, or a lower price will likely have to wait.
