Green Hell gameplay highlights and reviews

Green Hell puts players in the shoes of Jake Higgins, an anthropologist stranded in the Amazon rainforest while in search of his wife and a miracle cure for her cancer. Not everything is as it seems in Green Hell, though, and you will explore concepts like grief, corporate greed, and the mental struggle of being stranded deep in the forest. There are also additional free campaigns that you can play, which add dozens of hours onto the original story and further develop the characters you've come to know.

Alternatively, players can dive into endless mode, which is a more traditional survival-craft experience that drops players into the open-world environment and tasks them with exploring, setting up base camp, and surviving in the wilderness in whatever way possible. The survival gameplay in Green Hell is feature-rich, as you might expect from a game that has had constant developer attention, with frequent content updates as recently as June 16, 2025. Players can opt to set up camp on the forest floor — using any number of materials, from wood, bamboo, mud, and rocks — or take to the canopy and build a tree house out of reach of the predators stalking the ground below. Similarly, Green Hell offers a lot of freedom when it comes to how you want to run your settlement. You can keep things simple with a humble lean-to, or you can build and decorate a small fortress with everything from animal breeding — including capybaras, tapirs, bees, peccaries, and anteaters, among others — to farming and crafting.

You will also need to defend your hide-out from hostile nearby tribes, predators, and other natural threats. In order to do so, you'll need to research and craft security measures and weapons for hand-to-hand combat encounters.

Green Hell's Steam reviews point to challenging gameplay and a steep learning curve as key features of the game, and many praise Green Hell for its in-depth, realistic survival and crafting mechanics. Likewise, there is no shortage of content and things to do, from exploration to crafting, combat, and animal breeding. The visuals and sound design also stand out as a highlight, with the realistic graphics bringing ther Amazon to life and the constant sound of birds, animals, and the environment generally keeping you on your toes.
