While it doesn’t happen as often as it should, some games push the medium forward, either through their gameplay, storytelling, presentation, or audio design. For instance, Grand Theft Auto 3 is, in many respects, the Godfather of modern open-world games. Similarly, the original Hellblade uses audio design as a tool to make players understand Psychosis.
In a similar fashion, Gris, the 2018 indie platformer from Nomada Studio, takes visuals to new heights. The game looks utterly breathtaking with a hand-painted look and gorgeous animations. The visuals aren’t there for show either. There are no dialogues in Gris, as the game relies only on the art and audio design to tell Gris’ tear-inducing story.
Before we move on to discuss the game, the Steam Summer Sale is now in full swing, and Gris is on sale at an amazing discount. The game now only costs $1.49, a 90% discount and the lowest price ever for the game (linked at the end).
Gris explores grief through color
Featuring five main levels, with each level corresponding to a different stage of grief, Gris lets players take control of a sad girl whose world is colorless. As players navigate through each stage, they solve puzzles and unlock new skills. Clearing each level gives the level its color back.
Gameplay-wise, Gris is incredibly simple. The puzzles aren’t too tricky to solve, there is no combat, no enemies to fight, no defeat, and no death. The game relies on its evocative art style and mesmerizing music to hold the player’s attention through the short 3+ hours of playtime.
So, Gris might come off as boring to gamers who are used to games with fast-paced combat. However, if you can overlook this “disadvantage”, Gris has the potential to become one of your favorite games.
Put simply, Gris puts all its eggs in the basket of visual design, audio, and storytelling. It is a game that takes the road less travelled in today’s gaming world. A road that is peaceful, thought-provoking, and deeply sentimental.
