Cyberpunk 2: New hints point to a feature fans have wanted for years

Anyone hoping to explore Night City with friends in Cyberpunk 2077 (PS4 version currently $35 on Amazon) is still out of luck. CD Projekt Red originally had plans for multiplayer, but these were put on hold following the game's troubled launch and eventually canceled. Things could be different with the sequel. A recent job listing provides some concrete clues, with CD Projekt Red looking for a Lead Quest Programmer to work on Cyberpunk 2.
One requirement listed under the preferred qualifications is particularly interesting: CD Projekt Red is looking for candidates with knowledge of multiplayer network architecture, as well as experience synchronizing game states and quests between clients and servers. The fact that these skills are mentioned for a senior developer responsible for story and quest systems is a fairly strong indication that multiplayer could play a role in Cyberpunk 2.

The rumored multiplayer ambitions aren't entirely new. Back in 2024, CD Projekt Red stated that it was considering multiplayer features for Cyberpunk 2. In September 2025, the studio was also recruiting a network developer who would work on multiplayer systems and matchmaking, among other things. However, there has still been no concrete official confirmation. It's also unclear exactly how multiplayer might be implemented or whether it could be available at launch.
Plenty of possibilities for Cyberpunk multiplayer
Fans are already actively discussing what a potential multiplayer mode could look like on Reddit. Some are hoping for a cooperative campaign similar to Baldur's Gate 3, while others believe separate co-op missions along the lines of the heists in GTA Online would be a more realistic option. A standalone online mode is also being discussed. However, the biggest concern among many players is that multiplayer development could come at the expense of the traditional single-player experience.
