Nvidia has reportedly discontinued the GeForce RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 GPUs. Leaker Moore's Law Is Dead thinks that these cancellations have more to do with the state of the AI industry than Nvidia preparing to launch the RTX 50 Super series.

Nvidia has reportedly discontinued the GeForce RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080. You basically can’t buy the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 for a reasonable price anymore, which directly points to dwindling supply. Serial leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead reports that Nvidia could replace the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 with the RTX 5080 24 GB early next year. There are apparently also not going to be any RTX 50 Super series GPUs.

This raises a pretty important question: Why is Nvidia canceling high-end GPUs without releasing proper replacements? MLID thinks the reason is that Nvidia realizes the AI party is coming to an end, and Jensen Huang wants to sell as many AI GPUs as possible.

MLID explains that there is an “AI debt bomb” that could explode due to the inability of hyperscalers/data center builders to utilize the Nvidia GPUs that they’ve already bought. Essentially, Nvidia seems to have forced hyperscalers and small companies like CoreWeave to take early delivery of AI GPUs. The problem, however, is that these companies don’t have the infrastructure ready to use these new AI GPUs, causing the GPUs to sit in warehouses.

This presents a massive, hugely absurd issue since companies like CoreWeave also use their AI infrastructure as collateral to secure more loans to buy more GPUs.

MLID suggests that this infrastructure, which is needed to secure new funding, is at risk of never being finished if the AI bubble pops in the next 12 months. The fear of the AI bubble popping within the next 12 months is not unfounded, as Michael Burry, known for shorting the US housing market in 2007/8, has also reportedly bought put options on AI companies like Palantir, which are set to expire between June and December 2027.

Nvidia wants to sell as many AI GPUs as it can

MLID believes that Nvidia is scared of the AI industry slowing down, which is why the company has canceled the RTX 5090 to divert the supply towards AI/workstation GPUs. MLID gives the example of the RTX Pro 5500 Blackwell Workstation GPU, which uses the same GPU die that powers the RTX 5090. The leaker thinks that Nvidia realizes that the AI bubble will soon pop, and its CEO, Jensen Huang, is doing everything he can to keep the party going for as long as possible.

In short, Nvidia wants to sell as many AI GPUs as possible before the music stops. The RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 are simply casualties of Nvidia's greed.
