The popular online video platform Vimeo has announced that content created, shared and viewed through its medium now has the option of Dolby Vision integration. This may unleash the potential for enhanced detail with improved brightness for many creators. However, there is a catch: the upgrade is available for certain Apple devices only.

Vimeo is a video-making facility that doubles as an all-around sharing and streaming platform at this stage. It has just announced the addition of Dolby Vision to its settings at the creation stage within its platform, touting the service upgrade as "cinema-grade video for all". However, "all" in this context defines users with Apple devices only.

The new option within Vimeo is, as it turns out, only compatible with iPhones of the 8 series or newer. Alternatively, it can be used on iPad Pros, except those of the first generation; certain post-2017 macOS devices, or the Apple TV 4K, so long as the screen to which it is connected is also rated for Dolby Vision.

These restrictions notwithstanding, the new move by Vimeo is potentially great news for content creators reliant on their new iPhones. They can now record, edit, manage and share their newly enhanced video using apps on their mobile device alone, provided they make sure HEVC 10-bit, HLG, and the 8.4 Dolby Vision profile are on while recording.
