The discourse around Ubisoft's upcoming Assassin's Creed Shadows has been nothing short of disastrous, primarily due to the company's choice of protagonist Yasuke. It seems some Japanese netizens did not take too kindly to the matter, and the company has now issued a statement to quell their anger.

Ubisoft starts off by apologizing to Japanese fans and states it has done its due diligence about the Japanese Feudal Era. It promises to redesign some problematic in-game elements before launch and rounds things off by stating Assassin's Creed Shadows is artistic fiction and not to be interpreted as literal history.
The whole Assassin's Creed Shadows kerfuffle started when one faction doubted the historical accuracy of Yasuke. Somehow, it even prompted a response from Japanese politicians, who called for an in-depth investigation into Yasuke's origin.
Like every discourse on the internet, it has been filled with mud slinging and vitriol, and Ubisoft's statement is unlikely to douse the fires caused by its seemingly questionable narrative decisions. The game is up for pre-order now and launches on 15 November 2024.
