USB-C refresh for Apple magic accessories rumored to arrive in spring of 2024
Rumors circulating on Weibo, originating from the user "Instant Digital", suggest that Apple is gearing up to unveil refreshed versions of its Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad in the Spring of next year. Notably, the revamped peripherals will embrace USB-C ports for charging, a departure from the previously employed Lightning ports.
This shift aligns with Apple's overarching product strategy, as evident from the transition seen in the iPhone 15 lineup, where all four models now feature USB-C ports instead of the traditional Lightning connectors.
While the transition to USB-C is a significant update, it remains uncertain whether there will be additional design enhancements beyond this change. The accessories have largely maintained their aesthetic since the last substantial update in October 2015. However, subtle revisions, such as the adoption of braided cables and the introduction of exclusive color options tied to the 24-inch iMac (currently $1,249 on Amazon), have been introduced over the years. Furthermore, Apple introduced a Touch ID-equipped Magic Keyboard in 2021, a feature previously exclusive to MacBooks.
One longstanding quirk in the Apple community has been the placement of the Lightning port on the underside of the Magic Mouse, a characteristic that has attracted both amusement and criticism. This awkward design choice renders the mouse unusable during the charging process. The upcoming version's USB-C port placement has yet to be revealed, but users will certainly appreciate if the refresh offers a more convenient charging experience, addressing a historical pain point for users.
