Big Gamer with Multimedia Ambitions. Toshiba presents a 18.4 inch notebook that is predestined for gaming thanks to the heavy duty Core i7 processor and the allegedly efficient GeForce GTS 250M with its Qosmio X500-10V. The desktop replacement notebook is equally qualified as an entertainment system with an integrated BluRay drive, a FullHD resolution display and a sound system. Read in our review if these pretensions can be completely satisfied.

Premium gaming power and performance. The Qosmio X500 is designed for gaming, high definition entertainment and high performance computing. The Qosmio X500 is one of the most powerful laptops currently available, and nothing stands in its way. But it's also a transportable, rather than a portable, computer, and we were disappointed by its speakers and trackpad.

Toshiba's Qosmio range aims to pack all the fun of a desktop PC into a laptop chassis.
The configuration of the Toshiba Qosmio X500 that we reviewed, the X500-116, packs a powerful punch in terms of features and performance. That goes some way towards making up for its huge size and unappealing colour scheme, but we also think it's slightly too expensive.

It’s been a while since we looked at one of Toshiba’s Qosmio laptops. In fact the last one was the G50-115 way back in 2008. A well-built and (generally) incredibly well-specified powerhouse of a system, the Toshiba Qosmio X500-10T is let down by Toshiba’s obsession with glossy plastic finishes and a surprisingly weak graphics card. However, if you can manage an extra £100, the next model up somewhat remedies this latter issue, making it the better option.

In summary, the Toshiba Qosmio X500 is an incredibly powerful laptop with a gorgeous screen which could've been a lot better had Toshiba equipped it with an SSD. At AED 9,099, the (US$2500), the Qomsio X500 is decently priced for a gaming laptop with such specifications.

Let the games begin. The X500, an 18.4-inch desktop replacement, has already found its way into our editorial office before the review even began. Toshiba recently updated the graphics card, insisting on scrapping the planned GeForce GTS 250M and including a GeForce GTS 360M as standard, which we naturally put through its paces.

You won't want to lug this laptop around too much (at 4.6kg), but you may be happy to have it on display somewhere prominent, thanks to its stylish design. Though whether that's on your desk or somewhere suitable for watching Blu-rays is up to you. It's a powerful, expensive computer and very impressive, too.

While the Qosmio X500-128 is a good multimedia machine, its limited gaming power and lack of a Full HD screen make it a tough sell against its gaming laptop rivals. On its own merits, it's an easy laptop to like, but in this company it falls too far short.

Toshiba's long been a purveyor of high-end gaming and entertainment laptops. The Toshiba Qosmio X500-128 isn't quite as quick as the very fastest gaming laptops on the market, but it's certainly not far behind. If you're looking for laptop with an enormous screen and high-speed graphics, you should think seriously about adding it to your shopping list.

Back in Game. The Qosmio X500 was supposed to be the flagship gamer from Toshiba. It couldn't really live up to its predetermination with the midrange graphics in the previous models. Now everything is to be different with Nvidia's brand new GTX 460M graphics card.

The Qosmio X500 is priced at Rs.1,00,990, which is about 25K less than the Asus G74SX. But, where it lacks in a superior graphics card and 3DVision capabilities, it makes up for that with the larger screen, better speakers and a lower price. There are some minor niggles like the average build quality, annoying shortcut buttons that get in the way and the outdated graphics card, which makes this price tag seem rather high. Perhaps at around 80K, we could see the X500 as 'the' multi-media notebook to beat'.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M: The GPU has 96 shader cores but only a 128 bit memory bus that supports GDDR5 memory. With DDR3 memory, the GTS 250M performs clearly worse. Because of the 40nm process (and a selection process) the 250M offers a relatively low power consumption (the 260M needs 10W more).
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M:
Essentially a renamed GTS 260M but with higher clock rates (412 versus 396 Gigaflops, according to Nvidia). The GTS 360M delivers high-end performance with GDDR5 graphics memory.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M:
High-end DirectX 11 graphics card based on the GF106 chip using GDDR5 graphics memory (up to 1.5 GB).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
620M:
The Core i7-620M is the fastest Dual-Core CPU for laptops (at the time of introduction in Q1 2010). The 620M clocks betwenn 2.66 and 3.33 GHz due to the Turbo Mode and because of Hyperthreading, 4 threads are executed simultaneously. In the package, Intel also included a second die with an integrated GPU (GMA HD) and a memory controller. Therefore, the TDP of 35 Watt of the whole package is still quite good.
740QM:
The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

1.7 kg:
4.9 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
83.07%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
